My pony did that, he had liver failure which gave him massive brain damage and he managed to climb 2 dry stone walls strangling himself with his high neck rug in the process. There was nothing that could be done and he had to be PTS straight away. This case sounds very similar and I don't think there was anything a vet could've done anyway TBH.

Sorry, I should elaborate on that. I mean: all of my animals are cared for by one vet practice. The horses have 3 horse vets we can call on and we always ask for 1 of the 3 but get 1 of the others if he is not available. We have their number in our mobiles. What I meant was: did the horse have its own vet rather than having to phone round every vet in the area? Or was it a case of the horse's vet not being available?

IMO I think the vet would have pts, but I am not a vet and don't know what the real injuries were, so can't say for sure.

Am I to take it that you are the owner? If so, I really am so sorry for you and know how you feel as we lost our mare 2 weeks ago. Searching for answers will be all you can think about right now. It all sounds like a horrible mix-up regarding the vet part of it.

Sorry no, I am not the owner, I found the story on our local paper website and thought I would post in case someone could help.

I have my vet's mobile number for out of hours but I suppose if he was busy with another emergency and my horse was lying bleeding in the road I too would be trying all the vets in the area.... it must've been so horrific for them.

To be honest I really hadn't given much thought to whether the horse's owner was not there. I assumed she was. I didn't post here to lambast the horse's vet or owner; I posted because I was genuinely curious why it came across that the horse didn't have a vet and why that vet wouldn't come out. That was when I thought the OP was the owner, anyway.

OK.....I'm just going off what was in the article.

I think the issue is more with the fact that only 3 out of 5 vets answered the phone and 1 promised they were on their way and didn't turn up. It sounds as if there is a problem with vets around there.

I think the OP was meant to see if anyone could help the girl out finding a loan companion for the other horse.

I skim-read and have just read again and see it says the 23 year old owner was on holiday so she couldn't have been there. I just assumed she was.

I thought the OP was the owner but then when she said she wanted to see if anyone could help I assumed she meant to help find her a new companion.

I am sure she will find a companion for Harvey in no time.
