morning all...
for those of you who have read my many previous posts about feeding, ive just had a blonde moment breakthrough!

I was at the stables on my own putting away some feed and reading the packets blah blah blah when it suddenly occured to me that my extremely scatty mare who shouldnt be on any thing heating is on ride and relax. now thats fine its low cal etc BUT has got maize and peas in it!!!!

ok so we all knew it contained that but i thought to myself why the hell am i feeding this even if it is low cal when i should really be feeding hi-fiber cubes or h&p nuts?! Ive been feeding it for quite a while now (poss 1 and a half years) and never stopped to think about it caz its low cal!?

SO in the grand scheme of things if she was put on too hi fibre or h&p nuts her scatty brain may get even less scatty (its an on going project)

maybe im not too awake for this kinda thinking -it hurts! lol

Amazing what engaging brain can do......

However, just to put a spanner in the works - I was under the impression that Ride & Relax was supposed to be non heating......

That's what they market it as! When you read that it is free from barley, molasses and alfafa, you could assume it was cereal free. But as said above it does contain maize which is starchier than either oats or barley! I think it is the same for their Calm and Condition as well!

I have always round hot-heads are better on 'budget' nuts. I add chop and also speedibeet dependent on weather, work and condition.

yeah i dont know why i didnt realise it earlier! and shes alot more settled on the ride and relax compared to what the previous owner was feeding but im thinking i could get so much more from her when shes calm and just feed alpha a lite and nuts! i now think its really misleading -ride and relax my bum! he he

I know it doesn't sound logical but I find the most calming feed is top line cubes and build up cubes. They are both non-heating at designed mainly for show and dressage horses that need to be calm. I have had feed specialists at my yard for each horse and what I find amazing it that build up cubes have a lot of different ingredients to build up mix. This is true for all of the foods so check on labels for mixes as they often add things to look pretty but they can contain quite a lot of energy
