Well at 5 she's not really a baby, but as we have had to go right back to the begining she is a bit of a baby.
Lou Lou my TB mare was rescued by me April 2009, she was just turned 4 and was deemed so dangerous she was 'going to be shot' as the b**ch of a woman put it. I met her on the Sunday, her fate was sealed for the Wednesday following. I went into her stable and just looked at this poor little thing cowering in the corner teeth and feet ready should I get closer, after about 10 mins of me just standing inside the door talking quietly to her with my hand offered out to her, she stepped forward and rested her muzzle in my hand, the instant 'click' and 'bond' really did overwelm me and I knew I had to get her home whatever she was like. After much wrangling it was agreed I could take her. So on the Wednesday she was due to be pts, she came home with me in my instructors shiney new lorry.
She had raced as a 2 year old up until the time I got her, mad as a box of snakes, she would kill you soon as look at you. I had learnt of traumas that had happend to her (BAD believe me) and was quite happy if she was just a 'field ornament' for the rest of her life at least she was safe. Turned her out in a field for about 4 months, just so she could be a horse, after about a month she would follow me round while I was pooh picking, checking fencing etc etc after 4 months I had to walk her back down the road to the yard as she had sun burn on her heals and needed to come into a stable, now leading Lou Lou was a bit of a nightmare as she would literally spin round into you, stand up and try and pommel you with her front feet, whilst nashing her teeth at you, not today though she walked down the road like a little angel.
The plan was she would have a stable during the day to protect her sun burn (you couldn't get near to put cream on) and go out on one of the fields attached to the yard at night (no walking up roads) this was going to be temporary for a few weeks, well she hasn't gone back to her old field, she stayed put keeping my retired TB - dirty old man  VERY happy :D
At first we had issues, lots of them, but slowly she would let you in the stable to muck out, I could touch her, groom her and lead her safely to the field and back, her trust in me now is amazing, she is a real 'mummies' girl and will whitter on to me all the time she is on the yard, infact she shouts ! As soon as she hears my car she starts. She will always gallop up the field to me when I go to catch her, yelling her head off. I can throw my arms around her neck and cuddle her, hold her head in my arms and kiss her face all over, stand behind her and scratch her bottom (her favorite thing) I never in a million years thought all this would be possible so a few weeks ago I had to take the warmblood out of work for a bit, so I thought while I have this extra time lets see if Lou Lou is up for being re-broken, so we started of just separating her and Jock by walking her round the yard, he yells the place down, she's NOT bothered at all. We have a lunge arena at our yard so started walking round in there with her, still no problems, she didn't have a clue about lunging, she would just come straight back to me in the middle, so would walk beside her and then take steps away from her, to get her to see what she had to do, gradually she gets the idea but still comes back to me everso often, so I thought today I'd try taking a lunge whip out with us just so I can trail along behind her and give a little flick to get her going, not fazed by this at all, infact we even attempted trotting and after a couple of times she has now got it and trotted round really calmly on both reins. As the title says I am so so proud of my baby girl, she has literally climbed mountains to put her trust in humans again, I am humbled by the love she shows me, I have tears in my eyes with pure pride when I talk about her. A year ago I accepted she would probably be a 'field ornament', now I am looking forward to backing her and who knows one day we might be HOYS bound. Whatever happens she has a home for life and one very proud mummy :D
