Horse has been having back issues since Feb. We've been to the vet's countless times, seen chiropractor, equine sports massage lady, McTimoney person, had shockwave, H Wave, cartrophen - the bl**dy lot. Were given the go ahead to trot but before we could do that he must have slipped in the field again and his back is so sore and has come up in some wierd lump behind the saddle. His muscles are rock hard behind the saddle and he's very uncomfortable.

I've got to the point this evening where I'm thinking of giving him away as a companion because I can't face anymore heartache or vets bills which makes me feel awful because I love him to bits but I just don't know what to do with him. I'm still waiting for the NFU to tell me whether they are going to pay my claim which I should think is huge.

I just don't know what to do. 5 months down the line and he is back to square 1.

OH has suggested I go to a different vet and get a second opinion but there is a limit and I'm beginning to reach it.

Sorry - just needed to have a rant. Don't feel much better though!!

Oh dear sounds like a very bad situation...i would agree with your other half and perhaps get a 2nd opinion?
 
What part of the country are you in? Just wondering if anyone can recommend vets for you to get a 2nd opinion.
 
I'm in Dorset - Piddletrenthide.

Am going to ring vet on Monday and see what we can do next. I just want a horse that I can ride!! Is that so much to ask?!!
 
*hugs* I know how frustrating it is when they seem to get better then go back to square 1. Perhaps could you ask someone else to care for him for a few days to give yourself a mental break?

We often are so busy caring for our horses we forget how damaging the stress can be to ourselves.
 
Just a suggestion and perhaps it's a stupid one but would turning him away for 6 months to see whether rest will help be an option? I spent a fortune on laser therapy on a deep shoulder injury to no avail as well as physio and vets etc. Eventually very frustrated, I turned the horse out for 6 months and he came back sound, time can be a great healer. Best of luck, i hope he comes right for you.

Don't know what the full story is but if it was me I would try Bowen Therapy (unless you already have) - it seems to be a 'last-attempt' thing for a lot of horses with muscle problems but have seen it work and it made the biggest difference to mine over McTimoney and Physio. You probably need minimum of 3 sessions to see a difference so I'm guessing it was cost you about £100 - you may be able to claim that back off your insurance if your vet okays it.

I can highly recommend Julian Gaze who is based near me but I think he travels all over - other people have used him on here too.

Whatever you choose to do I hope that times get better for you.
 
I've decided to turn him away for 9 months and let nature take its course. I can't keep spending money on him and not get anywhere. He cost me £2.5k - he's been brilliant but has been broken for 5 months. I can't face anymore heartache this year so he's going out!! Now need to find out if anyone needs a companion.
