... I came off Toby!

It was a total freak accident, and he was so shocked to see me on the floor, I think.

Schooling in the ménage, getting some good work out of him, went to trot past a plastic jumping block, and as we went past, all four feet came of the ground and he shot sideways! I of course went the other way! He cantered off, turned round to see me on the floor and then cantered round the school, until someone managed to get him.

I was fine, bit bruised and sore, but got back on, and had a little trot round. He seemed ok after, didn't seem too spooked. Thank god I had my BP on, it took most of the impact, as I have only bruised the bit that wasn't cover by my BP... My bum!

I'm hoping to ride him tomorrow, but will take it slowly, one, coz of my sore ass, but also coz I am a little worried... I can't help but think I've bitten off more than I can chew, but one of the girls on my yard said he is such a sweetie, and not the type to do anything crazy!

I guess it's just knocked me a bit? Xx

Well, everyone falls off now and again, so not all that shocking, surely? Horses spook, and if you're not expecting it or aren't terribly secure then, yes, you're likely to tumble off - all part of riding.

Hope you feel better tomorrow.
These surprise spooks are excellent for improving your stickability. If you're feeling a bit worried, borrow or make a Jesus strap. it'll help you to ride less defensively until you're 100% again.

Good idea, I will put a neck strap on tomorrow.

I know we all fall off, and after my bad fall in January, I think this one has just revived some bad memories. Normally if he spooks, he just kind jolts and then carries on. Not sure what happened, can only think as he trotted past, some sand hit the plastic block, and literally made him jump!!

Bad falls do knock your confidence and I do believe as you get older falling becomes more of a worry. I hope you feel better in morning even if stiff

Thank you! Yep you certainly become less bouncy when you get older! My friends have been very supportive, and I know I'm not on my own. I just need to get back on tomorrow, even if I just walk and trot round, and build my confidence back up.

I was just beginning to feel like I was getting the hang of him, but I know he is only a baby, and it's not like he bolted and jumped out the ménage (like the horse I previously came off of!) xx

I'm not a nervous rider but always wear my air jacket now - schooling, anything. All of us at the yard who have them do now. I don't care if people think I'm a wuss! I paid good money for it and want my money's worth!! As you proved today - we can fall anywhere / any time... Only thing that smarts now is forking out another £17 for a new gas canister:) If you are quite nervous after a bad experience, on a youngster and can afford it maybe an air jacket is worth the money...? Unfortunately even falls that seem pretty innocuous come back and bite us so I'm all for damage limitation...

Most likely you'll feel slightly anxious tomorrow and the next ride and then settle right back into it again. Hope it goes very well for you and the youngster.
