Our old lab Bertie was put to sleep on Wednesday night at home. He was suffering from yet another gastro bug and suspected pharyngeal paralysis, having choking fits which we thought would never end.

He died in my arms and wagged his dear old tail until he went to sleep. It was very peaceful. He will leave a hole in our lives which is unfillable. He was my husband's and my first dog together.

Bertie was a truly remarkable dog. He did not have the best health and had to have both his middle ears taken out four years go due to superbug which made him totally deaf. He had terrible arthritis too but was happy and bright until Wednesday.

He was a true gentleman and had no idea what "aggressive" meant. Gentle and loyal. We are heartbroken.

I'm so sorry

RIP Bertie, sleep well xx

Huge hugs for you ((((((((((((()))))))))))))))

My OH and I have our first dog - a black lab called Loki who is 16 months old - even now I can't imagine how we would cope if anything happened to him.

Sounds like bertie had a great life - and so good that you were there for him right to the end.

Thanks guys. So nice to have some replies. He did have a great life and we couldn't have done more for him really. Wish I could have taken his arthritis away for him though. He was very stiff at the end but had always been keen to go for a little wander and get up the ramp into our car for a drive around. He just loved with with us, wherever we were.

We are having him cremated and getting his ashes probably middle of next week.

So sorry to hear that - having lost my own little greyhound on Monday evening I know how hard it is, even when you know that it is coming

R.I.P. Bertie, what a lovely post.

I can sypathise, I lost my old Lab, Ben, in August last year, he was 13 yrs old and also suffered from Laryngeal paralysis. Like Bertie he wagged his tail until his last breath, and also like Bertie he is dreadfully missed.

I'm so sad for your loss. We lost our big GSD girl in November and we still cry now. She also had arthritis and maby other problems throughout her life but we did everything we could for her. She also had the sweetest nature and I feel your pain because they leave such a big hole. She left behind our 10 yr old black lab bitch and we have since added two little black lab girls who fill the house with fun and are doing a great job of remodelling the kitchen walls and trashing our newly landscaped garden but despite being a joy they don't fill the hole. My thoughts go out to you at this sad time. I hope you decide to give a home to another little soul - people like you should X

Thank you for your kind post. Your little ones sound lovely. We will probably give a home to another little soul at some point, but still have Bertie's younger sister (10) and Topic (11), springer which we took on as owners had baby and he hated the baby. We recently took in a stray kitty, who would have starved if she had lived rough much longer and she is a complete delight. We tend to go through life acquiring other people's cast offs!!!
