So what happens to the Bridleway and us ?

Best you get involved with The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust and put forward the horse rider view. If you nosey their website it does say their Strategic Intent, which no doubt is part of the blurb they use to persuade and lobby for grants if taken loosely does appear to encourage varied use:

'Strategic Intent
The sympathetic restoration of the former, Derby Sandiacre Canal Corridor, with regard to social, economic, heritage and environmental factors. By implementing continual improvements through the introduction of multi user routes, water-borne transport, canal side developments, and engaging local communities bordering the route. We are seeking to engage a wide and varied audience. The ability to reinstate a sustainable canal corridor as a green recreational amenity is the cornerstone to bringing these waters back to navigation.'

So I would say good scope for horses to be included as current users of the route in order to satisfy the above statement.

Cool, cant wait to see our "alternative" route while all this digging and work is going off, our river path has only just been opened up after being closed since november for Eon to fanny around with pylon cables blah blah blah, after numerous communications with the chocolate firegaurd known as rights of way officer regarding not one single diversion sign for riders while there are a shitloads for walkers anglers cyclists, nobody bothered to let me know it was reopened, since november I followed the "diversion" which took me next to 70mph traffic through roadworks lorries diggers dumpers you name it machinery flapping fenceing ect ect, so I reckon we can look forward to lots of noise dust and similar consideration for horse riders when this lot kicks off, so consideration as usual, thatll be sodall then.

Am I not right in thinking that if 'Permissive' the bridleway can be taken away at anytime?

Wondering when you would spot that one Wilson......

Tell you what Pedantic. Instead of continuous grumpy sniping, how about you get yourself down to your local BHS committee and volunteer to help with access issues [/quote

Yes and which second of the day do you suggest I use to carry out this task, baring in mind NO ONE ELSE on our yard has bothered to badger the chocoloate firegaurd dept on any issues I have mentioned, if I have any time and energy left at the end of the day after work, I do like to spend some of it riding, the rest of the time I like to spend reeling in the open mouthed fish on here

At the risk of being yet another open mouthed fish can I suggest you join (or form) a local bridleways group? I also work full time, keep horses at home, am a committee member of our local RC and am a member of our local bridleways group, it is possible if you are prepared to give up even more free time.
The issue with permissive bridleways is just that and permission can be withdrawn. If the route had been ridden without permission for a minimum of 12 years you could put a claim in with your rights of way dept. That is why when a locl landowner wanted an old ridden route to be permissive use, we put a claim in.

Which bit do you ride pedantic? I used to ride part of it too. To be honest I think this is all a pipe dream, they have been on about restoring the derby canal for years, (and the cromford canal which is slightly more likely to happen as it hasn't been built on and is just in a bad state)but the costs are absolutely crazy, and it would be very difficult to get a linked up route as it has been built on in places. Not to mention that the council might be a little reluctant to pull up all the multi-purpose paths that they have laid......

Your best bet would be a letter to your local councillor. Then post the letter on here and get other local people to copy it to their councillors. You could also write to the Derby Evening Telegraph - they are always so desparate for a story that they would certainly include something about the plight of horse riders on this path.

Not looking for a fight--BUT
When I read comments like that--makes me wonder why I bother to volunteer

I have been a BHS bridleway access officer now for about 35 years and yes it does take up some of my free time but it also providee other horse riders and carriage drivers with new and improved off road riding.

As regards the permssive route you will need to ensure that under the proposed plan that it becomes a restricted byway so that both horse riders and carriage drivers can use it for time ever more. Why not join your local BHS county group or a local bridleway group and get involved with this project so that you and others can continue to ride it?

As regards an alternative route while works are carried out ensure that this is in the plan and that the contractors must be made aware that horses will be using the temporary route and that is securely fenced with post and rail fencing rather than metal spiked poles with plastic ribbon on it! (I have had a lot of experience with temporary routes and it is important to specify the type of fencing and also that operators of all vehicles going to or from the site or on the site are made aware that horse riders and carriage drivers will be using the route and that they must drive courtiously towards them.

It is important to get input in to this project from the very begining so that horse riders and carriage drivers get something out of it.

Good luck as this sounds an exciting project.

I wonder a lot of the time why I bother at all.
