Bought a recently backed rising 4 year old as my first horse in my 30s with the intention of sharing it with my nervous rider OH. At the vetting the vet gave me a stern talking to and told me she was unsuitable and that they couldn't recommend purchase (despite not finding anything wrong with her) then advised me to buy a nice sensible older cob that would be suitable for first time adult buyers. There were lots of raised eyebrows when we turned up at the livery yard too.......
..... but I can honestly say I have never made a better purchase, OH and I have had so much pleasure from her. She is an utter angel under saddle, has done OH's confidence the world of good. He hacks her alone on the roads without a second thought, and goes out in company often acting as nanny when the "sensible first horse types" are misbehaving and almost always leading. She's been as good as gold when out competing and at hound exercise - so glad I didn't spend three times as much on a sensible cob as the vet suggested
Getting back on a 17.3 three weeks after she had ditched me and seriously messed up both my legs and then realising my legs weren't strong enough for me to dismount. Managed to get off with help and a large mounting block -idiot. I was still on crutches, what was I thinking? Did I learn? Did I hell, I kept getting back on and making a pigs ear off getting off, including throwing myself onto the muck heap for a soft landing - big fail couldn't get up and was very smelly.
I've just sold my trailer and am going to buy a lorry - people think I'm mad because a lorry costs more to run, but after working out how much I spend on running a 4x4 as my normal vehicle, I am cheaper with a bloomin great lorry and a little car!!
buying a stallion (which was bad enough on its own) i had never seen it only mum had met him once... no one tried him so we had no idea what he was like to ride other than the 20mins mum saw him ridden
JennyNZ - absolutely no way would I say you were stupid! (Coming from someone who probably also frequently gets called stupid, but competes successfully in endurance at advanced level with completely barefoot horses)
Bought an unbroken 4yo as my first horse... took said said horse out bitless, treeless and barefoot on an open xc course (no jumps, obviously) shortly after I'd broken him in myself... starting hacking alone again after nearly killing myself last time we tried it...
The list goes on. I'm still here, so they can't have been that stupid!
