How many stables would you have?
Everyone I talk to seems to have a different opinion. What would be the optimum of horses for a stress free operation (yes yes ..i know... none ;))???
I'm really interested in your thoughts.

I have 7 stables currently, and rest the winter paddock all summer and have another 4 acres purely as hay.

I have 17 acres and 12 stables, I do not make hay although at the moment I am thinking about it as there is so much grass.
I currently have 13 horses and ponies here, although I have had up to 16 or thereabouts in the summer, never more than 12 in the winter in case they all need to come in for some reason. Usually I keep 4-6 out all winter and the others in at night. Most are out 24/7 all summer and have been since March this year.

A friend of mine has 16 acres, she has 7 full size stables and 2 pony boxes. She also cuts about 4 acres for hay, but her grazing is extremely rich due to being on a riverbank so they always have tons of grass.

If it were my land I'd want to stick with a maximum of 10 boxes I think just to be on the safe side. :)

It sound to me like you have it about right. I certainly wouldn't want to have more than 10 boxes if you want to have a hay field.

It's just so hard to know with the weather. I've been topping huge swathes of grass out of the field...weeping gently to myself at the loss of all the potential hay... and you just know that if I decided to put some more stables in next year there'll be a drought, the clay will dry rock hard, there won't be a blade of grass and hay will be at a premium!

Its clay, flat and very wet, in real dairy cow country, I do not fertilise ever, it is just too rich, it gets very muddy in the winter but always grows back.
