soaked oats help please

i have had some oats soaking for nearly 24 hrs the water has gone a disgusting brown colour but the oats look just the same as they did when i put them in, have i missed something? i followed the factsheet PF posted to the letter

I didn't get that, my water drains off virtually clear but the oats have fattened up and gone golden, compared to dry oats.

My water drains off absolutely gross! Looks like wee! Seems very odd though that the oats look the same

Actually, have been thinking; if the oats dry out after you've drained them, they could well look as they did before you soaked them. I don't bother draining for very long; just let them stand until they stop dripping.

Do you buy double cleaned oats? Mine are triple cleaned and are beautiful and golden, no mank on them whatsoever.

they look the same before i drained them, i think they mustnt be very good quality oats

i just bought a 25kg sack, from the closest feed merchant which takes an hour to drive to

Oh bummer!! Are they their own oats? Could they exchange them? I know it's a way to drive, but if you get several sacks it might be worth it... course there is a chance (remote, I think) that your horse won't take to the diet, but on the plus side they are cheap, aren't they? (should be!)

they are a brand i doubt if they will exchange. they were slightly more expensive than i expected (£5.60) but a lot cheaper than the conditioning mix, hes a fussy eater so just wanted to get the one sack to see how he goes rather than stock up on something he wont touch. mind you he polished off his breakfast like it was going out of fashion (after his very first hack- am very proud)

Could it be they're a bit old? I can see why you wouldn't want to stock up but if he likes them then that's a good sign! Perhaps you could stick with them until you run out; I doubt they'll do him any harm (unless mouldy or otherwise damaged) and you might find they work well.

they look and smell ok will persevere with them it might just be there was some 'rubbish' at the top of the bag

Good plan. Soaking will help rinse out any ickiness. As I said earlier; my water is absolutely gross after only 12 hours!
