If you soak hay i kow that it soaks some of the goodess out so if it is soaked for a while will they still get somethig out of the hay i.e. fibre

20 mins removes dust, to remove calories 12 hours ........ asked my instructor this one the other day as I only soak to remove dust but we have a porky pony on the yard. She said that the calories removed are not vast but 12 hours is needed else not worht doing. Hope that helps

I agree vvet told me 20 mins to swell spores and remove dust , but at least 12 hours for keeping fatties full up. But feed a vit / min supplement in something like hi fi lite. I do this with my hugely fat sec a , he is slowly losing weight without being constantly hungry

I always soak mine for minimum of 12 hours. Then rinse it through. This will give them plain fibre. same as you eating shredded wheat.

It's best to get hay that's a year or so old, as it has less nutritional value. You can also feed happy hoof or Hi FI Lite as a hay replacement if need be. I find putting fibre nuts in a snackaball means I can feed less hay and him still have the forage he needs.

Another thing to remember is if you're soaking hay for so long to reduce the nurtitional value and they're not getting anything else, you might find you'd do well to feed a handful of happy hoof once a day or a handful of Hi Fi Lite and add a multi vitamin.

As others have said, soak for about 12 hours. Rinse well afterwards. And feed a low calorie balancer to ensure that the pony is getting all the vits and mins he needs.

Good doers - grrrr, it is always such a worry isn't it!
