After heavy rain the other day, I have discovered my professionally cleaned (!) rugs have not been rinsed properly. Horse came in covered in a soapy lather under his rug. Since then, his coat has gone all scabby, with bits of hair stuck together. This comes out in clumps when you try to pick scabby bits out leaving bald patches about the size of a 5p. I havnt a clue what to do, has this happened to anyone else and do you have any advice?

I was thinking of bathing him with warm water and a mild solution of antibacterial shampoo (dermobian or hibiscrub) using a soft brush - does this sound like a good idea? Obviously followed by a good rinse with warm water!

I am never having my rugs cleaned again! So annoying as it cost a fortune and took weeks in the first place!
I will be complaining, and forwarding the vets bill if it comes to that!

My horse has come in in the past with a white foamy lather under his rug but he was very warm and I presumed it was sweat. There was no bald patches afterwards though. Maybe a weak solution of hibiscrub may help it, if only to really clean his skin and get rid of the soap.
We had a problem last year with our rug cleaning in that they ended up like mini skirts. Im probably quite local to you, where did you send them? PM me if you like, just that we got a weak excuse although they did pay one livery compensation.

Sounds like it has brought on a case3 of rainscald. Get scabs off first and foremost, with Protocon or similar. Then a good wash with Hibiscrub.
It would be best not to put any rug on until they are healed, It will only give the bacteria a good place to breed and worsen things.

Rain scald would leave hairless slightly pussy patches where the hair comes off in a chunk with the skin as well.... it could be dermatitis but the cleaners should have used a non bio type of detergent which would be less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

When my horse went a bit mad last year in his rug (brand new) he came in all foamy and obviously there was no detergent in that.... but he didnt get a reaction though.... however the rug from then on smelt like a DEAD DOG!!!!
