i've been recamended soda crystals to get my grey all clean for shows ets, but i forgot to ask how much you add to the water, i don't want to burn my boy or anything??? any one use them??

well, seeing as you should wear rubber gloves to use soda crystals, I wouldnt put them on a horse...you'd burn it. I've heard of washing powder too, but wouldnt try it myself.
Try experimenting with different shampoos. There's one called Cowboy something, which I've heard good reports about.

fairy liquid for ym grey who is white after i wash him!

There is Cowboy Magic, but personally I have always used simple 'Stock Shampoo' from Agri merchants - its what farmers bath cows and bulls with before showing. Has always been great for mine, and for socks etc.

I was told to wash my grey in dilute bleach.... I WAS HORRIFIED TO SAY THE LEAST !!!!

Using something like champion tails silver highlight shampoo that is purple, and supreme blue powder rinse, will help you get a whitey white

in my opnion i would firstly use a quantity of fairy ( i prefer fairy as gentle) lemon washing up liquid, lather up and leave on for a while then rinse and shampoo with a horse one,

you shouldnt need to fairy liquid whole body each time you bath as it removes grease but handy for a starting bath

also what i have found is tresemme deep cleanising shampoo is excellent but you have to leave it on to break down the dirt dont rinse to quickly

i am gulity of persil and net curtain whitenering the VERY tip of the tail of a grey you have to be very careful, the best way i found is to ge a jug of kettle boiling water, dissolve a persil tablet and stick the end of the tail in and hold, DO NOT GO HIGH UP YOU WILL BURN THEM !!!!

then have a bucket of cold clean water ready to dunk in after about 5 mins

Soda Crstals will burn in my opinion

Vanish soap is ok for legs if rinsed well.

I use stock shampoo for body and have to say even the worst stains come out#! have used fairy liquid on legs and after every winter i am also guilty of net curtain cleaner to get rid of the mud and grime but only use it on the bottom and am very careful.
Have to say i will try anything on her manky tail but would be very careful what i put on her body.

Soda crystals - do not burn

They are a good old fashioned remedy for hard water for a start. Your Mum and granny would probably have used them and you buy them in any supermarket near the washing powder usually. No need to wear rubber gloves either !!

You can use them in your washing machine or for handwashing along with your orginary washing powder - even for your underwear and stuff, they are good and not a problem. They wouldnt be used on their own for washing though -that is not what they are for usually.

They remove grease very well too when you are washing up the old roasting pans - they wouldnt hurt your horse at all. I have no idea if they would help the actual cleaning though and make him whiter but it might work. If worried I would try it on the bottom of the tail first to see what it did. I reckon you should disolve a mugfull in a half a bucket of warm to hot water

If you ever block a drain up by putting fat down it you can use soda crystals in hot water and it dissolves the fat.

Hope that helps.

Soda Crystals - a brief history
Soda Crystals (washing soda) have been used around the home, by farmers and in commerce and industry for over 150 years. Soda Crystals are extremely versatile and are relatively inexpensive. One of the reasons Soda Crystals have remained so popular is that, unlike many modern cleaners and detergents, Soda Crystals contain no phosphates, enzymes or bleach.

One Product - Many Uses
Soda Crystals are alkaline. The main uses of Soda Crystals are to dissolve grease, soften water, loosen dirt and reduce acidity. Soda Crystals, along with soap and Soap Flakes, were virtually the only domestic cleaners at the turn of the twentieth century. They were used for cleaning and laundry and can even be used in cooking. Still available in free-flowing crystal variety, Soda Crystals are now also available as a liquid version - ideal as a surface cleaner, a trigger spray version and for commercial use in an anti-bacterial formula.

Soda Crystals are very effective but are also gentle. However, if you are submerging your hands in a soda crystal solution for a long time, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves - especially if you have sensitive skin.

So perhaps a very mild solution might work, I used to use stock shampoo though which is great!!

I hot cloth with soda crystals after clipping. Also do grey and white tails with it.

A handful chucked in a bucket of hot water. Sponge on and then towel off straight away. lifts dirt, grease and poo. never had a reaction on any horse or my hands and I have very sensitive skin.
