Hi has anyone had soft palate surgery done and had to have it repeated at a later date? I’m buying an ex racehorse for low level eventing that has had it done.

My sec D has an abnormal soft palate which gets cauterised every 2 years or so. It doesn’t make much difference, so I probably won’t get it done again. I definitely wouldn’t buy a horse knowing it had an issue.

Had it done on a native last November. Didn't really help and she is now ridden bitless which is much better for her. Vet did say she was a bad case though. They do the cauterisation under standing sedation so I'm not sure of the exact cost (she had a hobday at the same time) but in the £100s I imagine. Assuming antibiotics and bute on top of that.

Is the horse currently racing or eventing? That will give you an idea as to how its breathing is and whether it would be up for the job you want.

He’s finished racing as he’s 8. He’s doesn’t appear to have any problems (makes a slight noise in canter)

What was his racing name?

Soft palate surgery can be done 2 ways. Cauterising which can be done under standing sedation and tie back/forward which is more invasive. Most horses have no further issue with their wind in their lives and it doesn't ever bother then again. I would not be put off having a horse that has had a wind op.

Thank you for the info. His racing name was Dr Hooves :)
