Had the farrier up to the yard this morning, and after a long look at his feet the farrier says that he has soft soles and that is why he is acting so footsore-not because he has pulled his shoes off(they were his first set of shoes and not having them back on cos now going to be turned away again til next year).

So have got some keratex hoof hardner to put on his soles, but is there anything else I can do?

give him NAF profeet fabby stuff

my mare has terrible soft soles

My horse had very soft soles and my farrier also told me to use keratex hoof hardener on them- it worked brilliantly and didnt take all that long either.
He also said not to use it on his hooves though as it makes them too hard and brittle.

Keratex is fine short term, but longer term actually damages the hooves.

Keratetex has got formaldahyde in it (which is why they say apply wearing gloves!) really nasty stuff! I use the NAF rock hard which does the same job, but is safe to use

Thanks all....keratex it is then...I'm usually quite lax when it says to wear gloves but I may actually use them if it had formaldehyde in! Is the NAF stuff just as good-not heard of it before?

Ive used Keratex and had no problems with it, you only need to apply once a week as the norm, worked on my girls soft feet.

Or you could have your farrier put sole guard in it as this does improve the condition of the soles. Keratex has good revies for its hardening abilities. I dont know about Naf personally from any of my clients.
