My 20 year old Section A pony suddenly went slightly unsound and within 2 weeks became very lame (holding up hind leg) and obviously very uncomfortable. Vet came after 2 days of box rest & bute and advised to continue this for 2 weeks. 5 days on - lameness much worse and further vet visit (different vet) advised continue with treatment as before or take her in for full work up. ALSO She is over-weight as we were caught out with grass this year & did not section small paddock off quickly enough so she is 90kg more than should be.
Decided to take her in as wanted to get to bottom of problem and after nerve blocks x rays and ultrasound scan diagnosed soft tissue injury to stifle as above.
Camera & surgery option not really appropriate in view of her age , me not having vet fee insurance cover (! long story!) etc and may not work anyway.
Box rest, bute, strict diet then if required weight loss is achieved -1.5% of body weight- give a steroid injection & when she can walk / bear weight she can have small walks out.
I wonder if anyone has had the IRAP therapy and although she does not have degenerative disease whether this might be an option to consider rather than steroidal due to risk of lammy ?
Any experiences of this would be interesting as I am seeing vet tomorrow to pick her up - very grateful as did not think would be bringing her home at all this morning !
Also any boredom breaking ideas most welcome. She lives out with 2 long term pals at mo & I know she just wants to get back out with them
PS Have every confidence in both vets who have seen her so far & the practice !!
