Hi,

New to the forum and seeking some advice on solar power fencing, where to get the best value and what type to go for.

thanks :D

I have a solar powered electric fence charger like this one
http://www.fishock.com/store/electric-fence-charger/ss-440

It does a pretty good job, I run it for a fair size starvation paddock comprised of an inner and outer layer (both double stranded -outer layer uses tallest posts-yes my pony is Houdini :-D)
As long as there aren't too many knots in your wire it gives a consistent charge throughout the whole fence if that makes sense

I use the Gallagher ones for all my fencing, brilliant, won't be going back to batteries in a rush. They are expensive though, I pay $250 each for mine, but they are worth it as far as I am concerned.

No worries about failing batteries or power cuts, easy to install, mount them on a T Post and that acts as the earth as well, also easy and light to move around. I have T Posts outside every paddock and move the energisers where I need them, none of that irritating faffing about with stakes, batteries etc.

funily enough, i was having this conversation today with my OH's boss...
I've just bought a fantastic electric fence starter kit off ebay, which saved me nearly £100 compared to my local equestrian store. The energiser has the facility to run off D cell batteries, or a 12v car battery.

We were discussing how often the car battery would need to be charged, when OH's boss mentioned using solar panels to charge it in situ. Apparently caravanners and the like use them to trickle-charge their leisure batteries when they go camping. I would imagine they'd be alot cheaper than those specifically marketed for equine/electric fencing use - last time i looked i'm sure they were in the £200-£300 bracket.

Don't know if thats of any use to you, but its definitely something i'll be looking into :)

I have one of these attached to my battery £19!! http://www.maplin.co.uk/solar-powered-12v-1.5w-battery-trickle-charger-98358
My battery was last charged fully via the mains charger on 13th April. Still giving out a good zap :D according to OH who happened to touch the fence a few days ago lol.
