Soldiers try to bring dog home from (basra)!!

I read a book a while ago about american soldiers who tried to get a dog out. The lengths they went to were amazing and they did it in the end. It's totally banned to keep dogs in the camps apparantly but the blokes are so starved of anything warm and friendly they can't help themselves, and then of course they can't leave them behind.

It must be hard, it would kill me to leave an animal behind in such conditions, once I had spent time with it like they have

There should be special arrangements for soldiers to bring these dogs home. It might help their mental state too as we keep reading about how they fall apart when they get home. Why can't the army set aside some of their kennels for quarantine or get the army vets to vaccinate them etc to get pet passports for them then they wouldn't need quarantine.

exactly... bloody ridiculous!!! im not sure it should be left to the army, as they are on a tight budget as it is and to fully equip all the soldiers they use all the money that have, bbut surely the government could do something, im sure plenty of people wou;ld give money to see this dog come home not only the soldiers families, but everyone!, and yes i beleive that it would help the soldiers mental state... FFS england, get your butts into action!!!

Don't think it's necessarily the money that's an issue, more the red tape and rules over importing dogs. Getting a pet passport needn't be costly and with army vets out there anyway it would probably cost a max of £20 per dog for worming , vaccinations and blood tests and I dare say the troops would willingly pay that. What the government needs to do is help out by making it easier in these circumstances.

The military can hate service personel getting fond of dogs though - my ex was out in Kuwait/Iraq during the first Gulf War, the service personnel befriended a dog, were planning to bring it home etc... so an officer shot it

Whilst accepting that this view is going to be very controversial it does remind me of all the hoo-ha which went on in New Lounge etc about the rescues of French horses - and the comment was made, why are we rescuing French horses when we have plenty of horses in the UK needing good homes etc

I would think that the same view could apply here....

Yeah that's very true, we're not exactly kind to our animals over here and we're overflowing with unwanted pets but I'd like to think there's room for us to be kind to animals everyhwere

The soldiers get so attached to the dogs, it's like a piece of home for them, something to love, something to care for when the rest of the time they're getting shot at and blown up. It would seem really cruel to use the dogs while they're there and then just leave them behind as the dogs treatment would be 10 times worse than anything some people here can dish out

And not a great idea to shoot dogs that the soldiers have got attached too! What sort of affect must that have? No wonder they get screwed up

You should read From Baghdad with Love!

sorry but I'd be wary of what a straydog might bring in, it's not enough to say awww well they should be able to bring it in, it needs to go through the same laws as all other imported dogs

Yep I see what u are saying there, and im sure the dog would go through the same channels and be placed in quarantine, they must have blood tested him already, cos they have vaccinated him, I think thats why the funds are needed, to foot the cost and procedures of bringing the dog back.

I don't think they want to bypass quarantine laws, rather they want help funding the cost of the quarantine.

PMSL not even close to the same, this animal has been living/working with the soldiers, thus in my book has earned its right of passage.
