i have a 6 yr old mini schnauzerx and 18mth old jrtx (both rescues - one privately for free through friends and through kennels) The jrtx took quite awhile to housetrain, but both are clean now. They are left on their own for about 5-6 hours a day every third week, the other two weeks my OH is on nights, so they are in the house while he's in bed. When no one is in, they are left in the utility room with beds, toys and radio on. During the day they are clean, nothing much disturbed. However on the occassions when we are both out for a few hours in the evening, one or the other has soiled in the room or wee'd, often something is chewed up. We leave them in the same room, with the radio on. Obviously they don't like being left in the evening. It happens even when we have been with them allday, lot of walks, and then they are left for a few hours in the evening. Any ideas on how to overcome this?

I'm not able to help, but you are not alone! My daughter is currently housesitting for someone with three dogs and three house cats - the dogs pee EVERYWHERE! I visited my daughter today and the house STANK! Whilst I was there, the three dogs basically used the kitchen as their loo - just peed on the floor - it was unbelievable! They have a "dog flap" for access into the garden, but they just pee in the house - EVERYWHERE! My daughter picked up the laundrey basket, and, yes, it had dog pee in it!

A couple of weeks ago, I took the houseowner's sofa to the local tip (she's a family friend) because the dogs had basically used it as a place to "cock their legs". My daughter's really into gun dog training and dog "psychology" and she believes that the dogs "control" their owner. Not for one minute suggesting this this is the problem in your case, but just to let you know that you are not alone! Incidentally, two of three dogs in question are rescue dogs.

You could set up a camera and see if somethnig is disturbing them and see which one it is (as may only be one)
Is there any change in feed time?, do the get fed later in the day, and maybe no get let out as frequent, as in literally would they have a wee/pooh break at the time you are out? not hat suspect this, its possibly a little anxiety.
If they are clean all other times then maybe lessen the space when you go out for he evenings, use a pen and place their beds in the pen and toys/chews (try an open pen (roofless one):D and see if they would remain clean with less space. Sometimes reducing space can help with feeling a little more secure for dogs, they tend not to pace and get het up looking/listening for you.
Try a dap diffuser just incase in this instance they/one is getting a little anxious.
But defintely try and rig something up so you can compare how they react when left at there normal time and on the specific evening.

Thanks, some ideas there to try. They have their dinner at roughly the same time, but will try feeding earlier when we go out so they've had more time for toilet breaks. Will also try restricting the room they have. It could be the mini schnauzer as she can be abit of a princess and gets quite mardy if she feels hard done to, eg will ignore people/dogs and stick her nose in the air!!!

interesting - my youngest bitch is doing this if I go out in the evening but she is choosing to go to my room so definately a 2 fingers up. She did it this morning despite having been walked AND the back door being opened as I was ignoring the dogs and watching the rugby.

I am buying a child gate to go onto the top of the stairs next week - never had to worry about shutting bedroom doors before.

Can confirm its 2 fingers up - if doors are all shut.. there is no little messages left for me when I get home.
