Tried to pull my 3 year olds mane for the first time tonight. Had to really although loved it long (friesian x) as another youngster took a chunk out of it a year ago and it never recovered, a real door step job. He hated me pulling so friend suggested the solo comb. What a disaster! Didn't know what I was doing and it ended up looking like I had taken the scissors to it! WHAT NOW! Apart of course blaming it on someone else! Will get pics tomorrow - a real clanger!!!!!

oh no!!! Could you pay somebody professional to sort it out? Thats exactly why the owner of my loan horse does everything with blades near him!!

Get one of those mane rakes. It's definitely not as good as pulling but it will sort out the doorstep/scissors effect as well as shortening and thinning it a bit at the same time.

Solo combs should carry a warning!!!

A sharer I had took one to my mare's mane and it looked like a VERY bad haircut - all different lengths, standing straight up in places, lying flat in others, scissor type marks...... disaster!

Apart from hogging (!) I'd leave it - at least it grows back!

If you read the instructions on the solocomb packet it does tell you to backcomb first. Also if you only do a small amount at a time it works really well. I use it on my youngster (rising 2) as it would be too sore for him for me to pull it at the moment though come june I may well pull it, depending on the amount of muscle on his neck, as I need to plait it for shows and a well pulled mane does wonders for plaiting. In terms of neatening it up try using a solocomb on just a couple of strands at a time, it takes a while but looks really neat afterwards. Hope this helps

pickles mane is a little dodgy at the moment looked good then the blade was blunted and wouldnt cut so won't be sorted till I buy a new blade.

At the end of the day solo combs still cut the hair and so when it grows back you end up with the punk rock effect even if it looked ok when you first did it. A mane rake is defo much safer, I have sort of ruined what is left of Tarquin's mane with thinning scissors. I had to gently pull the rest to make it look normal!
