A fellow livery on my yard has a lovely KWPN mare and on 'professional' advice has been told to give her massive hard feeds and one section of horsehage a night obviously by 7pm latest she has nothing and nothing else until about 6am I worry this is going to really affect her at somepoint but I don't know whether I ought to broach the subject or not with her owner as I'd hate to cause a problem or her feel as if i were being rude, intrusive or similar and I'm sure she must know she will have nothing by late evening? What would you all do? Any advice greatly appreciate x

Perhaps do something like suggest she puts the horsehage in a couple of heynets so she slows down etc and go about it that way

Much as its not to my taste, its her horse so not your place to say anything, maybe mention it to yo? If owner is a genuine novice I probably would make an exception & ask ym to have a word.

Littlelegs this is kind of what I was thinking about it not being my taste but not being my place. Biggest issue is she's a lot older than me and certainly would not consider herself a novice and I think most people would take exception to a 19yr old saying something.....tricky

1 section of haylage is going to last a couple of hours at the most. So she is potentially going all evening and night with nothing to graze on.......ulcers waiting to happen.
As AmyMay says, have a word with YO.

In that case saying something yourself is more likely to make her dig her heels in to prove a point. Ym or yo is best bet.

I'd tell her you happened to be down late the last couple of evenings and her horse was already out of haylage.

You can't make her feed it more if she doesn't want to though.

Giving advice to folk is a bit like taking horses to water, lol.

What she has been told to do, is a recipe for creating ulcers, as I'm sure this is what your afraid of.

I'd probably say something too her, but I'm not bothered about a bad reaction from people. The horse is really the important thing.

Parker 79 an independent nutritionist she paid vast amounts to!!!

Soltydog she is bedded on shavings

Ulcers are indeed my concern for her

And Echo Bravo its just given on the floor

if it was me, I would mention I had been up late one evening and she had ran out of hay, and if I came up at the same time again did the owner want me to chuck an extra section in the stable.

If she said no I would ask if she was not concerned about possibility of ulcers etc.

Hope you sort it out

Then I would say I noticed your horse was out of hay by 7 pm are you not concerned with it getting ulcers being left so long. Suggest a net of barley straw for horse to nibble ad lib all night if she is concerned with horse putting on weight.

Hi Pixxie
Was the nutritionist definitely independent? Not from a feed company? It is the most absurd advice I have ever heard!

No idea what the nutritionist was called amymay but whoever they were must've trained in some kind of parallel universe where horses eat like people or something equally as ridiculous. I have a feeling they were from swindon :/

I think ill try the I happened to pop my head over when i came back down the other night tactic Lol!

The livery told everyone she was and she's not feeding 'one brand' as it were but i couldn't believe it when i found out this was the given advice, I don't know any nutritionist who would provide this kind of advice

Just a thought, the horse's massive feeds aren't actually buckets full of ready grass or hay replacer are they? It might be best to check before making waves.

Can you ask the owner for the name of the nutritionist?
I cannot believe an equine nutrition expert would recommend this regime........If it was me I would call the nutritionist and explain your concerns. Maybe the owner mis-interpreted the results. If the said nutritionist is any good they will be quick to rectify the situation.
