Mouse - the biggest puppy has started feeding very fast from his mum and then throwing up. He is very active and doesn't seem to have a temperature. But he is very windy and does keep throwing up a teaspoon or so of milk after feeding. He is still gaining weight and is hugely fat!

They are four weeks old now and we were going to introduce them to puppy food this weekend when we move them downstairs - as I don't want them weeing and pooing anything other than mothers milk in my bedroom. They are all walking and trying to run - which makes us laugh- and Mouse is just as active - if not more - than the rest of them.

Any advice gratefully received. (oh and they have teeth now)

Sounds strange, don't know much about puppies but maybe the reason he is throwing up is because he is feeding too fast and maybe eating too much. But i do not know what would be making him feed fast in the first place.

Could you not call the vets for some advice? Not sure what you vet is like but ours are always willing to help and will give advice over the phone, then if they think it warrants it they can suggest bringing him in for a check-up. Sorry cannot be of more help.

Is the bitch starting to leave the pups for longer now as that might be one reason he's bolting his milk? Also have you wormed them yet as that is very important?
I use Earlyworm for the first few times; it's a syrup which is easy to syringe down them (put it on a spoon and it goes everywhere, it's very sticky!) You might be horrified when you see worms, you'll wonder how many and how long they can be! Don't let the bitch clear up after them when they've been wormed either, the worms need burning or putting in the dustbin if you can't have fires. Don't forget to worm the bitch too. The pups need to be wormed every fortnight until they are 8 weeks old then monthly for the first year if that helps.

Thanks MFH_09. I feel terrible now -because I did know I had to worm them but the weeks have gone by so quickly. I will try and sort that out tomorrow. Yes Bunny is leaving them for ages now and will only sit and feed them for a few seconds. He is huge though - still twice as big as the other puppies. It is probably time to try and wean them onto solids.

Do you know if I can get the earlyworm stuff at a pet shop like pets at home or will I need to go to the vet?

Oh and how long does it take for the worms to come out?

LOL! Don't worry, I'm always forgetting!

Yes, you can get Earlyworm or Easyworm (made by Johnsons or Sherleys, not quite sure now) at the pet shops but you might have to get Drontal or Panacur from the vets.
If you haven't done them yet it might be an idea to give them half the dose first and a full dose the week later.
If you worm them in the morning you usually see something about mid afternoon; it's usually all cleared up well within 24 hours; it might even be quicker seeing as yours are such a small breed.

The childrens' rice breakfast cereal (used to be Farlene I think) is great to start them off but be warned, it gets everywhere and dries like concrete!
