Went to check electric fencing this morning and some s##t has stolen my energiser and battery.

God knows how as field is hundreds of metres from any road and the battery was huge ! The worrything thing is they must have been wandering through the land as it would not have been visible from any footpath.

Grrrrr.....I'm pretty angry.

This is why my very clever husband made me a security box that my energiser and battery go in. It's screwed into the ground so can't be lifted.

I hate to worry you but just watch out if they come back - we lost our energiser, then the next day the horse rugs were gone too, with some old jump blocks that we left 'hidden' behind some trees.

If there is anything else nickable in the field I would get it out of there pdq….

I keep mine inside my padlocked shed and run out to the fence with lead out cable inside a hosepipe, having had 2 energisers stolen previously. I think most thieves are quite opportunistic so the more hassle stuff is to get at, the less inclined they are to bother. Makes you really angry doesn't it?!! Agree that it makes you worry that randoms have been wandering around the field as well.

I disturbed someone the other week trying to nick an energiser from my land. Got a good look at him and gave all the info to the police along with descriptions. There aren't interested. Very annoying. Really feel for you op. It isn't just the stuff they take, although that is bad enough, it's what goes around your head afterwards. We have different arrangements now which hopefully will make further attempts fruitless.

Had this last years and was furious like you. It's a horrible feeling that they've been near your horses too! I wouldn't replace it without some additional security as I wouldn't trust the low lift not to come back.

Been there too! I dug a hole and now keep my battery and energiser in it, i put a sheet of wood with some old hay over it.

Just wanted to add my sympathies, it's horrible when things like this happen. May those responsible rot in hell.

Rather like the hole in the ground idea, although I think where I am it would be full of water at the moment.

We had one go once too, it was about half a mile from the road and had a huge tractor battery that we had to move around with a quad it was so heavy. It happened as our neighbour's field was being hay made, and there were footprints through a dyke to their side, I'm pretty sure the lads that rented and baled the field took it, but could never prove it.

It's a difficult thing to hide, a thief only has to touch the fence to see its electric, then wander along the fence line to find the source. I've never put one out in the field since.

Barstewards - That is why I have mine rigged up in a steel security box that sits on a 4' spike that has been hammered right into the ground-the battery and energiser sit inside the box which can only be opened with an insulated key, the box is live when the energiser is one and as I have a very powerful unit I would love to see someone grab hold!! Cost alot of money but when a few units went missing from my area I splashed out and bought it. police NOT interested and I have a good idea of who is nicking them locally, just need to get them on cctv which I will share on facebook as this scummy piece of rubbish is well known in the area.

We ve had 3 taken so far, cought men in the process of climbing in to the field following the wire once, cheeky B.......ds just gave me a hard time ( verbally ) and left when I wouldn't go away. Ours are now chained and hidden so you would have to smash them to move. Sad when you have to go to these lengths but the thieving low life will always be around...

Me too. Not had one go since. The whole box is live. Only downside is changing the battery if it's not quite dead. Ouch!

Daughter walked out of her front door one morning last year to find two men collecting all her batteries and units (she has fox-proof chicken pens and pigs as well as horses) 'We didn't know you was in love...' well, no, obviously, that was why they were chancing their luck climbing through the hedge. She made them unload their van and got back all but one battery... she also took their vehicle reg and again the police weren't interested. A month later she lost her £1k incubator and a till full of egg money.. a couple hundred £ (I know, silly to have left it accessible) but they ignored the quad bike parked in the next barn. Still the police weren't interested.

Believe it or not so far this year there have been two armed burglaries in the village and one attempted at the shop/post office and police interest is still negligible. I think the problem is that the village is on the border of two counties and neither wants to travel to the limits of 'their' patch and so they pass the buck from one to the other.

Rural crime certainly seems to be on the increase, probably because the scumbag thieves know the chance of being caught is practically zero and much of the stuff they steal is easily sold on or something they want to use themselves

I have had many energisers and batteries stolen over the years and had a strong box made that couldn't be moved. Unfortunately after a few years they came prepared with tools and cut through the hasp. Nowadays I just leave the energiser on for the odd night or two to remind the horses about the electric fence and then bring it home. I appreciate it's not an option for some people if you have to be 100% certain of keeping your horses contained for safety reasons.
