ok briefly i have been at yard for nearly 5 yrs - my mare is partialy sighted and stress head given her back ground but in a lovely happy herd . I have always asked to be told when new horse going in field and to be at weekend whan ppl around and i or daughter or ex can be there.

ok sign went up sunday - i was away -to say new pony in field monday - was put in fieldat 7am - owner went to work not bothering if as herd went in there were probs - i had no idea new horse going into field - tonight got told if dont like find new yard! ok always option except baby is partially sighted and when looking early last year was case of no sorry wont have her or grazed on own and baby needs a herd . at this moment im sobbing all i ask is for some respect and understanding but i now face the decisision which i knew was coming but not so soon - some HHO hugs please - sorry not prob explained well in above but head whizzing - when i was told baba sight was going YO was all over me saying "we will vet all going in field" "baba is so important " ok really ? mmmm just some hugs please x

Have some *hugs* you sound very stressed

But on a big yard, they did take reasonable steps to warn you such as putting up a sign. I don't think you can have it all, if you want her in a herd then the whole yard cannot reasonably revolve around you. How would the other owner have felt if she had to keep her horse cooped up? She's paying livery too.

Is Baby ok? Did they all get along or has there been a scuffle? I'm sure in no time at all it will be as though the new horse was always there, herds adapt very quickly and the pecking order is usually restored to order within a week or so. If you move yards then i doubt you would find any more accommodating unless it was a private yard. If Baby is happy where she is then why change things for her?

hun i agree yard can not revolve round me at all totally agree but to be told by 2 other liveries that didnt know new horse going in on monday tonight and that the owner didnt wait to make sure alll ok was hard, i ask for little trust me all i ask is to be told about new horses and to be put in field at week end - simple requests and what used to be done but noow there is no management

Im sorry but the YO is right. She did put a notice up.....but you can't expect her to run her business around your horse. You equally cant expect the new owners to check with you before they turn their horse out or wait forthe weekend. When I have new horses, they go into the field after a nights rest and they sort it out themselves. So I dont blame the new owners for going to work.

I understand that you would worry more about a partially sighted horse, but you do sound overprotective.

sorry disagree - given that new horses in herd are most stressful and risky times the yard as always turned new horses out at weekend when other livries can be around - mmmm all i have ever asked is that from day one 5 yrs ago(before baby sight started to go) as it as always been till 12 months ago - yard manager should mange and instruct and inform and that isnt happening - i have never asked for anything given lasses sight =_just the respect of telling me and arranging for week end turnout of new horses - sorry rather be there when turned out than sat at desk getting call" big lad "or little lass" as been kicked but thats my thoughts

You would dissagree - you're the OP... you still havent said if your horse was hurt.

But that means that if a horse arrived on a monday morning it would have to remain stabled for 5 days? After 5 days stabled i think most horses would be more likely to hoon around and upset the herd. I think it is safer to be turned out with supervision (as long as someone capible is on hand) so that they can get used to the group. I doubt that the owner just chucked her horse in the field, shut the gate, turned her back and walked off. But she probably had things to do and can't stay there all day.

If you don't like it then look for another yard, but you've already said there are none which are any better. Maybe a quiet chat with the YO asking her to send you a text when any new horses are going out so you can try to arrange for someone to pop up and check Baby? I think that's the best i would expect in your situation, as well as someone on hand to sort out any issues but i would expect that of a yard anyway.

Sprite hun point one im not over protective my lass is in a herd a grt herd there is rough and tumble and playing and baby is there playing to
point two the day i wrap her up in cotton wool is day i say sweet dreams baby
point three no she wasnt hurt at all - big lad as been in past - but my point is a notice day before horse turned out is insufficient
point four onwner turning horse out on a monday morning at 7am and not hanging around to make sure all ok]
point five whilst i realise i am only 1 of 30 liveries good mangement and common sense must prevail here - new horse in herd DAMN BIG RISK OF INJURY - we cant introduce as you should ie 1 by 1 slowly so every poss chance to reduce injury should be taken - yes???

somethingorother ok you bring horse on yard on a sunday it needs worming yep it stays in till following weekend - sorry in my eyes yard owner should explain this to poss liveries so they can plan to get horses on friday or saturday - i paid for 2 weeks rent to keep my mare 60 miles away going everyday to see to her before moved to current yard so she went out on a sunday - its all down to planning :) x

Sorry no - I think your over reacting - We're going to have to agree to dissagree.
A sign went up, if you dont like it - keep baby in for a few days. Simple.

You cant set the rules for the YO...She can do what she thinks is appropriate...The only choice you have is stay or go.

Also - why does a horse need to stay in for a WEEK after worming?

Actually OP I completely see your point - perhaps you have not managed to put you concerns accross well enough.

What ever happened to correct worming and isolation of new horses ???

If the new horse had been correctly wormed and isolated the OP would have known the horse was on the yard long before it made it to the field.

To the above poster - the reason you would keep a new horse arriving in for a week for worming is because the correct way to worm a new comer would be 5 days of panacur guard and on the sixth day tapeworm treatment - the horse would then go out 7th day ie one week.

It would be usual practice to isolate the new horse from the others for two weeks to prevent the spread of disease.

So yes I see your point - though I would probably be more concerned at the lack of management on the yard - which if this was addressed would automatically sort out any problems with not knowing a new horse was entering the herd.

One can only hope you are not in the Liverpool area !!!!!!!!

I also can see your poiitn but agree with above you havent got your point accross the best.
We have to keep new horses in for 1 week when it comes to yard, it is wormed and then put out, this prevents any illness and also bringing worms onto the grass. This is the biggest issue in my eyes if i was on your yard.
The management of yard is bad but again if they had wormed you would be aware of the new horse going in.
The owner who just turned out and left is just silly, when ever new horse goes into field with ours atleast 2 people are around to intervene if necessary, even when the ones on yard move all together for summer from winter we are still around incase!
I wouldnt move though i dont think as your horse is happy.

I agree with this.....if I moved onto your yard with my horse and was told I couldn't turn my horse out until you were available I would be mighty pee'd off.....

Im so sorry for you hun to be so upset and I understand your thoughts as well. To be fair the YO did put up a notice and in a similar case Ive had I dont put any horses into a field with the alrady settled group until the new horse owner is there and any horse that could be bullied or has a disability i ensure that these owners are there and (we) me and other half and the other liveries stand and watch for about 30 mins just to be sure nothing kick off as these are you babies you put a lot of money into these animals and none deserves a vet bill if it can avoided but this is just what I do and Ive never had an incident in 20 years so it much work. Try and think calmly about the situation your were given notice, YO is only doing what is right for "All" concerned as this is her business. I dont hink she made it a personal thing so please dont take it to heart. Big hugs coming you way.

We don't get any warning on our yard they just get put in the field and kept an eye on by staff for a few days! They soon sort themselves out if there is too much agro then the horse is moved to another field... I have never been on a yard who has done things any differently.

They are also wormed and kept in for 48hrs before turnout.
