Hiya,

Firstly i will start by apologising for the no doubt stupid questions im about to ask, please be gentle with me lol!

So, i have not been hunting for about 10 years, the last one i went to as part of a RC group and it was all arranged by the RC (ie meet at a certain place to hack up to the hunt meet together, and all hack back together so no one got lost) but I would love to take my young mare hunting this winter as i think it would be a great education for her and she'd love it.

Now, how on earth do non RC/PC members find out about local hunt meets?? They dont seem to ever be advertised so how to i know when/where one is on??

And also, its been a long time since i had some smart hunting attire lol!! I plan to get a hacking/show jacket anyway to take my mare out to shows and i believe i have a smart stock somewhere. I probably need to buy some cream jods too as i only have blue ones lol!! I remember presentation used to be a big thing back when i used to hunt my ponies and we all were very smartly turned out. Now, im on a limited budget (arent we all!! lol) so i wont have the very posh stuff this time, i will of course be clean and tidy, but will we look really out of place in our budget attire?? Its been so long, i cant remember if hunt folk are snobby to us poor people or not lol!!

Also, the mare is a friesian. Her mane is about 2ft long!! What on earth do i do with that? Normal plaits are not really do-able! One of those long plait things maybe? Leave it loose??

Help!

look up on the H&H main page, there's a list of all the hunts by county. Ring the secretary, and just ask.

As for clothing, it sounds fine. Rather than a new jacket, go for a second hand thicker one, it will keep you warmer and drier!

Clean tack is a must, and as for your mare, I would leave her mane loose, and maybe just plait her tail smartly.

Find out who your local hunt are and see if they have a website. then you can access the secretary's number - I think you phone them up to say you would like to join them for a day, and that you are new etc etc. They'll be able to give you all the info you need re: meets, caps etc.

Our hunt is tweed/cream jods for autumn hunting, then from opening meet onwards it's black/navy jackets/cream jods. You don't have to have all the 'posh' stuff - I just had my cheapy jacket and jods - as long as you and the horse are clen and tidy - with no bright pink numnahs etc (!) - you'll be fine!!

Re mane, I'm not sure - I'd be tempted to put a running plait in to keep it clean and out of the way maybe??

Hope that helps a little...Lauren
