Some leading control help needed

My darling 17hh 720 kilo warm blood is quite correctly assessing that 6 hours grazing is not enough for him and once arriving at the field exit gate to the yard (some 3 fields away) is about turning and going back to the bottom of the fields.

This is causing me 3 problems
Too much grass (low grade laminitic)
Danger to my livery lady (who is rather strong)
Danger to himself as he is aggravating soft tissue in feet injuries.

A chiffney makes noooo difference.....Just makes him rear more determidly before departing.

I have ordered dually after advocating hate for them;-)


Any other ideas please?
 
I have a clydesdale who is easliy 850 kilo (if not a bit more) and she was on box rest before had a very similar prob when then walking her out i use a parelli halter and this has done wonders she knows when it is on now and dosnt even attempt to drag me anymore
 
Can you get a rather strong man on the end of the rope?? Sometimes that's all that's needed for a few weeks.

Or just leave out 24/7
 
As well as the dually it might be worth considering getting an RA out, I think Suzanne Marshall covers Kent as well as showing you how to fit it she should be able to show you the most effective way of using it

Amymay. No bloke at yard willing to help at required time and I would love to let out 24/7 but not ideal for laminitic horse and farm does not allow overnight turnout anyway.
 
Could you try turning out overnight instead ? He will get longer on grass with a lower sugar content. May make a difference that others are in and he's coming in before they go out?

Just read your last post....... could he go out for longer on a smaller sectionned paddock?
 
Try a stud chain over the nose - and USE it if he/she tries to bog off. Or, using a snaffle bridle, no reins) put a lunge line through the nearside ring, over the head/poll and attach to far side snaffle ring - this works even with my very manly stallion when he's feeling "distracted" and "innattentive" (read: bonkers!).

Yass thanks but despite constant nagging to farmer no small individual turnout available and yes I am looking at moving. :(

The parelli halter is thin and made of rope, personally I prefer what I have seen of the dually as I feel the rope halters have a tendancy to be harsher but in the end it's down to choice, and anything can be made harsh if used the wrong way.

What is your fella like when he is alway from the field, do you get the chance to practise leading him calmly when he's not quite so certain you're trying to starve him:rolleyes:
 
I have a bargey cob that used to just turn around and bugger off and the be-nice did not
stop him as when they are moving away from you at speed, the pressure thing doesn't work. He would also rear up and bugger off and one day managed to knock my woolly hat off.
I didn't try a chifney, instead went for the chain across the nose option. I didn't have a stud chain but did have a choke chain which goes fron leadrope right around his nose through rings on nose part of headcollar clipped back onto the leadrope. This is very harsh and I only had to use it like that a few times after which I added another clip from chain down to bottom part of headcollar so that the chain is slack but he knows it it there. He is almost well behaved now! And much safer to lead.
 
A Timely thread ! My cob has started turning round and peeing off when I try to bring him in from field. This I feel is mainly due to prolonged grass flush making him totally hyper!Also we have just moved yards so he is terrified of everything around him.
I have an old be nice halter which I think I will try tomorrow! Once he goes he is a devil to catch
 
Very timely indeed - I have a similar problem with my boy and yesterday bought an Eskadon control headcollar, it is basically a nicely padded headcollar with a chain which goes over the nost and under the chin.

So far so good and definitely worth £30!
 
Any possibility of longer turnout with a muzzle on if 24/7 isn't an option? And then if there's somewhere he could handgraze near stable coming in is a positive thing for him. Don't mean at all while he's misbehaving at the gate you should reward him by letting him graze then, I mean once back on yard.
 
Hello. Sorry didn't subscribe to thread and did not see answers!
Actually did the bridle with lunge line around the top and lead rope through one but ring too. Worked like a dream for me, didn't even have to make line or rope taut at anytime. Am now thinking livery lady not liked by my smart horse. Hmmmn. Thanks to all for advice given. Let's hope I'm still smug tomorrow:)

Was just about to second the bridle/lunge line thing - the poll pressure soon shuts them up! But I see that it's already worked for you! Well done!
 
Had the Be nice halter on mine this morning and he still managed to bog off, I had a lunge line attached though so eventually got him back. I think the be nice doesnt put pressure on his poll because he has a headcollar on all the time (nightmare to catch) and this was possibly on the headcollar strap and not his bonce ! Also this morning while trying to catch his he kept running at me with his ears back, he has never done this before as he has never been aggressive. I put my hands on my hips and made my shoulders big and growled and he did stop - dont know if this is the right thing to do ?
