My landlords son phoned and said a couple guys are coming over to pick up the tires that are next to the gate that connects his yard to my field but they had to go through the field to get them as the guard dog would of course have their legs off.... all fine no problem appreciated the heads up. Wasn’t worried about the boys pestering them or running in front of the truck as they were happy munching their hay.
Had to go up with some cream and hypocare for a little cut on big red after they had left and found my bloody gates WIDE OPEN!!!
Lucky for me I knew the boys wouldn’t notice as they were stuffing their faces but seriously!
I thought then oh they must not have seen the horses so assumed the field was empty but sure enough I found their poxy boot prints all the way over to the horses so they KNEW 3 horses were in the field and yet left the gate OPEN then left the main farm gate OPEN!
If I new them I’d be after them and swing for the cheeky sods. I have no idea what they did with the horses as they all buggered off and wouldn’t let me catch them which is highly irregular.
Some people! Rant done
Most of my threads seem to be rants...sorry

If it's a company could you contact the manager and put a complaint forwards. Good job they didn't notice it was open really !

Goodness!! How horrible! The farmer near me has started locking his gates after walkers kept leaving them open and letting the cows out. Doesn't take much to shut a bloomin' gate!!

My thoughts exactly! I spend 10 minutes struggling with a gate last Sunday on a hack but I closed it in the end!!

I think they were just some blokes my landlords son had sold the tyres too but I will be giving the poor sod a piece of my mind when I see him :P

Not wanting to sound to distrusting but I would be locking the gate and keeping a very close eye on the horses for the next few days. There should have been no reason for the blokes to go check out your horses, I would be concerned about them thinking about returning for them to!

I was thinking this also I am so paranoid anyway about my precious boys luckily the only ways to get to them is either through the yard with the huge dog or right past my bedroom window and past my own 3 dogs but I think I might just let my paranoia rule and put locks on all the gates! I also have CCTV but no guns (for the best) :P

how stupid! my horses are on an old farm with a few difference businesses and quite a few of the gardeners like to come and pat the horses. which i don't really mind, the other day i was in the barn and left the door open a bit and suddenly hear it shut- one of the men had seen it open and the horses in and was worried i had left it open so shut it! they had not spotted me. we do have a lock on the field near the drive as fishermen go through it to get to the river but in the past have not shut it properly, so now they have to climb over the locked gate!

Get after them cos that is nonsense.

Currently at a new yard where elec gates keep being left open, even though the stables and schools are right by the gate that leads on to a main road, just last week my two little ones were walking down the middle of the road, luckily we caught them, and i mentioned the gate being left open, and lo and behold the gate is left open again today, excuse waiting for a delivery, well the delivery driver would just have to wait for a minute for the gate to be opened surely for the sake of the horses safety, some people. I would have thought this would infringe on their livery insurance.

I just lock gates generally. It tends to put of wanderers!

Louparkinson it might be better to start a new thread and actually say what the survey is about.

Some of the fields run through a public footpath where my horses are, and walkers are often too lazy to do the latch on the gate, or just leave it wide open! it is so dangerous with horses in there. Not only because they could potentially get on the roads if I've unlocked the front gate, but also due to them running around on the slippery ground. If there is a group of walkers, they will climb all over the fences, knock over my electric fencing (must remember to turn it on..) and after a while my post and rail weakens and breaks :( plus all the gates have dropped where they've climbed them. REALLY annoys me. I actually like the walkers coming by, a group of elderly walkers will sit on the logs next to the manege and have their lunch- I provide the entertainment of course while schooling my horses :) I asked them once to clap and cheer to get a youngster used to a show ground :o But those that leave gates open.. learn to read the signs and respect that it's hard work looking after horses and land at the best of times !!!

Very apt in a thread entitled Some people are cheeky!!! :rolleyes3:

I thought so too!

I have a Public Footpath going through mine but it rarely gets used but wouldn't be aloud to lock it for that reason which is annoying.

I have to say though it's amazing how many riders leave the gates open on the bridleways around here you'd have thought they would have a bit more consideration.
