This isn't a bitch or a moan, more a sad realisation at how the world has changed.

As a horse owner I know how lucky I am to have my boy. Before I had my own I would do anything to get a ride or be around horses (I didn't get my own until I was in my early 20's)

Anyway, I have horse mad friends who are horseless. My YO offered me her safe cob so I could hack out with a friend. I was massively grateful and off we went. Friend moaned the whole time that the cob was too wide. YO offered again the following week and friend declined as she said riding her horse was like riding a blob of plasticine! Ill add the horse is a star and the kind hard to come by.

The girl I share my field with has hurt her foot so asked if I had a friend who could exercise her horse (again, safe reliable cob type) so I asked my other horsey friend. She happily accepted but then moaned about the horse! Saddle is uncomfortable, horse is lazy (she isnt!) blah blah blah. I suggested we could poo pick the field together afterwards and she said no!

The two horses in question are perfectly safe hacking horses, my friends are both good but infrequent riders so you would think they would be thrilled. Apparently not... :p

I would be thrilled! I am horseless and would love the opportunity to hack out on a safe, sensible horse. Next time you've got a spare horse and no one to ride it let me know ;-)

Yikes, like you I would have been overcome with thanks if I got a ride when horseless. At least you know you needn't waste your time in future. How kind of those people to offer their horses too, feel good about that rather than bothered about the ungrateful ones.

When I was riding horseless (old boy retired) I was so grateful that other people were willing to let me ride their horses I never complained. I did however mention to one owner that her mare reared in the middle of the road in front of a car but that was for safety information rather than a gripe and I rode the horse again several times.

After the first friend declined the "plasticine" horse I did think ill never ask her again!

I am very surprised by my other friend though. She used to ride another horse once a week but he has been retired now so its been a while since she last rode. She has ridden the cob in the past (horses owner has an ongoing problem with her foot so she rode her the beginning of this year for a couple of months) and although never complained, never offered any help in return. We were on a yard then that did poo picking etc for you. We are now totally DIY and my poor friend has no chance of getting a barrow round the field in her current state, so I honestly thought my friend would help us! I wont be asking her again!

Don't think I have any other horsey friends. Maybe ill just exercise the cob myself :) x

My friend and YO are both particular with their horses as am I, so I am very grateful they even offered. Then I feel bad when MY friends slag of their horses. I rode my YO's cob recently and shes a fab horse. People just want want want and then moan even when its offered for free. I just don't understand. x

Oh, and I'd be happy to poo pick all day if required!

Would you like to come and live in New Zealand and poo pick my paddock? You'd also get the chance to ride and go to shows too. Just can't find anyone here reliable to help.

Recently two members of our Pony Club allowed a young rider the chance to ride at Pony Club on their horses while he was away from home for a year. Offer quickly accepted by said young man who rode the horses and handed them back without even running up his stirrups. Told one owner that she should be paying him to exercise her horse and that it wasn't his job to get it ready and put it away. This person had offered the horse to the extent that he could compete it - she would take it to shows for him.

To the other lady he rode her horse at rally then left it tied to her truck - stirrups hanging down in the pouring rain for her to sort out.

Needless to say the offers of rides have been taken away and said rider is now horseless! At that age I'd have been asking them what else would they like done in return for their kindness.

A true horse person would be very
grateful.

Your friend must see it as the in thing to do, be glamorous and be in the well off grown.

We know what the horse world really means, poo, sweat and hardwork!

You are all so right :)

My friend moved to New Zealand 4 years ago. She loves it! And keeps her horse so cheaply! Some of the pictures she puts on Facebook of her hacking are breathtaking. Ill come and poo pick for you :D xx

Sorry, I just nearly choked on some shortbread at Pedantic's post.

I agree, I was grateful for all the riding opportunities I got when I was horsless even if they weren't my type of horse. Last time I let a friend ride my girl she had a bit of a bounce going into canter ( it was the third time she was ridden after 6 weeks rest and I'd actually already warmed her up and she was fine....and friend also had far to much 'contact' with her mouth), friend got off and said she was dangerous and would never ride her again. Well that made me refusing to let her back on easy :)

Let me know what time your plane arrives and I'll pick you up! :D

I have already had an HHO person visit from UK - she is now living locally - got a horse and loving NZ

Friend A once offered mutual horseless friend B a ride on her mare. B arranged to come to yard and ride out with me on A's horse

She turned up to find me mucking out. A's stable was next to mine. Still needed doing....A was coming down after work to do it.

B stood and waited and watched....she only came to ride after all, she didn't want to 'get into that' ( ie mucking out/yard chores). She rode out with me, turned horse out back into paddock and drove off......
