cut a long story short
girl moves to the yard about 3 mnths ago its a diy yard btw, she has been seen twice pony wasnt in work due to having been off lame.
girl (15) at yard starts looking after it owner comes up once watches her ride and leaves the tack
girl rides it a couple of times a week for about 20 mins
this has been for last 2-3 weeks
today girl and sister who hasnt ridden for years takes said pony a 7 hour hack!!!!!!
would you tell the owner or mind your own

was going to say something and mentioned to someone on yard but they seened to think i was sticking my nose in , but if it was my horse i would want to know

I would be less concerned with the riding and more concerned with the fact that no one has checked the horse, fed it or given it water for 3 months. Presumably either someone at the yard is feeding it and it has water in the field?

Hasn't it occurred to anyone to speak to the YO about this, or get some advice from the ILPH? The owner needs to take responsibility for getting the horse seen by a farrier, wormed and generall looked after.

God, why is it the sweetest ponies that get these type of riders! I would defintely say something, but it doesn't look like the owner would even care.

Have a quiet chat with these girls about the basics and have a chat with the owner. As the poster above has said, say something as the pony cannot!

maybe she got lost?? sorry. try dropping it in to the conversation if you see her. what do other people on yard think?

sorry meant to say they r out at grasss just now
noone at yard really said anything
i dont think the owner will give a toss tbh
shame for the pony and i bet it will be crippled tmro

I'd mention it to the YO, and see what they say. Maybe they could speak to the owner etc and sort something out. Poor pony

I find this rather hard to believe. What you seem to be saying is that a girl who rides for twenty minutes twice a week,is capable of riding for seven hours.Sounds far more likely that she just rode round to a friends and spent the day there.

This is a bit odd. Who took the pony? The girl or her sister? Also...they may not have been riding the whole time. Maybe stopped somewhere. How do you know they haven't ridden for so long?????? If you are concerned then tell the owner.

P.S. I thought that at first too - that maybe they had ridden to a friends place or something, and had stopped, had a break etc, rather than been riding continously for seven hours. Would you not have noticed this in the pony when they came back? I.E. sweating?

no they rode for that long the sister took the pony
i overheard how they went to the castle then the woods then a park back to the woods then the castle then went to the cornfields and there are pics all over bebo

Even at a steady walk a pony would cover about 30 miles in seven hours,I dont believe these girls would walk 15 miles each.Talk to the yard owner and leave it at that.

From the sound of it I doubt the owner would care anyway. Better to explain to the girl why that was an unwise (I'm being tactful here!) thing to do - phrase it as putting the pony at risk of going lame again as it's not fit enough for that amount of work and she would be without a ride. You could get your point across that the pony shouldn't be doing that with its level of fitness but not make it sound too critical.

tbh i dont think its the riders fault. you get a chance to ride- you take it. i think the owner should be watching over what is going on more carefully, and therefore you should tell her. but i dont think you can blame two girls...they probably know little on fitness etc. etc. and thoguht that it was ok as the pony was there...

I know someone who took their not very fit pony on a 6 hour hack, around an area they didn't know, and on a particularly hot and sunny day. Needless to say the poor animal staggered back with serious dehydration. I don't believe it in this case, but yes, it can and obviously does, happen.

If they were just bumbling along at walk I don't really see a problem to be honest. That's just me. My lads aren't fit and they're getting on a bit and they can do day long hacks and not break into a sweat. We stop off at pubs and have rests and I'll get off and lead and stop and let them have a pick of grass and we have a thoroughly nice time toegether.

Unless they girls are training for the marathon I can't see them going any faster than a steady and sedate meander around the countryside really.

However if they spent 7 hours galloping around like lunatics then that's a different story.
