This happened three weeks ago and I'm still annoyed when I think about it. Travelling through a village on the way to a local huntertrial we come across a teenager on a coloured pony trotting like she's trying to escape from an axe murderer in the middle of the road, we overtake and three miles later get to the venue. I go for the numbers whilst my friend starts to tack up and I lift the saddle on to see said pony circling the lorry park in canter (we are still strying to work out how she did this). This was 10am, we finish the tacking up and go to the warm up for a 10.45 start, pony was going over the practise jumps. Friend finishes the hunter trail, we have bacon sarnies and a coffee and await the results, meanwhile pony is still going over the practise jumps. 12.15 said pony starts it's round, 8 minutes later she comes through the finish poles and proceeds to go over the practise fences a few times for good luck. 12.30 we left watching one very knackered pony, steaming and dripping with sweat being dragged to the sandwich van. Poor poor pony.

Makes my blood boil, I know of a group of people who get on, canter around for a good hour, after feeding their horses, and then when you think have finished!!! Canter some more!!!

What makes me more mad is they go full pult to home.... How to make a horse nappy :s

Friend witnessed well known family in our area driving transit van with horse tied to back this week. They drive their horses around local villages at speed .Fortunately police were called to stop them and my friend has connections to redwings rspca etc so it will get followed up.:(

Aside from riding directly after feeding, the long spells in canter are hardly a problem if the horse is fit enough - or doing fittening work. It's surely essential for eventers and other "high-fitness" sports competitors.

I also think nothing of cantering or galloping towards home - it won't make a horse nap if it is only allowed to do so when asked and is under control at all times. Mine certainly aren't nappy

eta - OP, that sounds excessive, especially if the pony wasn't fit

Yes, it looked quite perky when it arrived and we assume they took the 2 mile shortcut or hot footed it to the nearest yard for a lift, (i've done my fair share of hacking to venues) but it was beginning to refuse in the practise ring when friend had finished his round and it really looked worse for wear when we left

I hope someone reported her to the steward.

I mentioned it to the bloke with the clip board calling numbers in the practise ring and he said he would have a word. Whether he actually did is a matter for debate, as if he did it clearly made no impression.

Well done you :) Unfortunately there's very little you can do in the circumstances.

Have witnessed very similar..to make matters worse, this particular very overweight pony was propelled to venue at fast trot wearing a heavyweight T/O with full neck on..in August...hot...all day at show with rider on back...it did at least 7 classes that I saw...actually, don't get me started....

Saw this kind of thing at a show once... apparently well to do horse people too. Boiling hot day cantering around the indoor jumping practise jumps for god only knows how long, the very sad thing is she was just about to enter the ring and the pony collapsed and had to be pts where it fell.. Terrible thing to witness and it was a junior show too so lots of children around to see too. :(

that's awful. i think it's just as bad when you see people who have horses that they ride maybe 3 times a week tops, and then wonder why they're fizzy and they can't handle them.

there is more that one can do.. the r.s.p.c.a has a responsibility and duty to act..as a former 8 year volunteer for the kingston humane society in canada this makes me so mad... this person doing this to the pony needs to have the pony removed from their care as they clearly do not see the animal as a being with emotions and limits but rather as an object... and if this person is doing this to this pony could there be other ponies he/she rides?? and if so isnt it our duty to push the matter for the sake of the animals who cant talk for themselves.. when it comes to animal cruelty i really get mad at it... animal abuse, whether intentional or not is wrong...this may help for future incidents... not that you didnt do right but had it been me i would have pulled the rider off and while my other half hid his head in embarassment i would have publicly embarrased them while ringing the r.s.p.c.a.... not that this is a good way to behave but just to protect the pony from dying of a heart attack or collapsing from exhaustion which they sometimes cant come back from....

opps i got so angry i didnt remember she was a child so i wouldnt have pulled her off but still would have pushed some official into looking into the matter,,even if i had to stnad by his side till he went to investigate and then went with him to make sure it was done right and also make it so he had to do something more than a telling off....maybe invovlve parents and r.s.p.c.a.

Sorry, but although this is fairly horrid to watch, unless the pony is actually lame there is very little that anyone can do. Yes the steward can speak to her, but really in this instance no charity etc is going to have a leg to stand on. She wasn't from the sounds of it beating the pony, and if it was hairy it will be very sweaty. Its probably a good thing that charities can't say how much work we do with our horses, or some of the pony patters would have them all living in a field doing nothing.

Plus, as has been stated, it WAS taken to the butty van. I can't stress this enough...!

Lol - poor horse and all that but it won't die, I ride and jump my horse all day long 2 days a week in winter, sometimes staying on for 6hours at a time. Out hunting.

If it wasn't fit etc then poor horse but pulling the rider off and making a scene would be a bit excessive IMO ;) :)

Exactly. I really don't think this is the territory of welfare organisations - they have far more serious cruelty cases to deal with.

Er, well we used to hack the 3 miles to a local HT, I used to do one or two classes and then hack home too. The course was about 1.5 miles long, and I'd invariably be doing the novice and open, or the pairs and open.

Whilst we didn't exactly batter them along as its suggested by the OP, we would have undoubtedley cantered on the tracks there and back - well we were kids, and ponies never get tired! :D

We never had anywhere to tie them up to give haynets etc, although they would have had water.
