I've kept in touch with a few people from the DIY livery yard I left in the summer when I moved to my own place. Was having a convo with one of the girls yesterday and she mentioned how they always manages to get free hay off of the YO (sells big bale hay for £40 each - if you get your own forage you pay more a week livery)...I was like, oh really how do you manage that....the reply was, oh we just tell him we have already paid him for it and he must have forgotton....we've had loads of bales that way!

Now this really annoys me, as one the YO is a nice guy (too nice and yes a bit forgetful) and I don't like seeing people taken for a fool, and secondly, why should everyone else have to pay up, on time and in full, when other people feel the need to squirm their way out of paying for something.

Grrrr

No, particulary when I was getting through one bale every 3 weeks as horse was on box rest last winter!! Yep its expensive, but if you dont want to pay, dont have them!!

I'd of had to have said something to her during the confo (with out being nasty of course) buts its totally unfair on both the YO and the other liveries

Kenzo, I'm not very good in situations like that with friends, I tried to say thats not really fair on YO, and everyone else has to pay up, she just laughed so I didn't really pursue it (probably should have though but I'm a wimp)

Its her and her dad so when she used 'we' I assumed he was probably in on it too.....although that wouldn't surprise me really

And she works for quite a well known dressage rider...wonder what else she helps her self too!?

yeah I know, its hard if its a friend I suppose in knowing what to say, but hey don't be so wimpish...speak your mind girl!

plus people lead by example, if you made her feel guilty then perhaps she's think twice about doing it next time...hopefully.

Just be glad your not on the same yard as the tea leafs

It is stealing plain and simple

I know you say she is a friend of yours but is there any way you could let the YO know what is going on? Maybe an anonymous letter suggesting he keeps tabs on his stock as it has been noted elsewhere that it is not being paid for etc if you don't want to be seen as a whistle blower?

As you say - if she's helping herself to hay in this way what else has she helped herself to?

Well I use friend fairly loosley....someone I got on quite well with at the yard and have kept in touch with on and off...but I still wimp out at the thought of confrontation....

I don't really have any reason to go over there and see the YO, plus I stupidly dont have the telephone number any more. I am meeting for lunch though with one of the other girls from the yard in a couple of weeks so could get it off of her....

You could still type a letter, print it off and post it though. Just say it has come to your attention that liveries are taking advantage of him and you want to warn him

That really angers me, it is so unfair. I can totally understand your wimping out though, I think I would too

I would be telling the YO this! I would try and do so in a way that didn't sound petty, but would also suggest a system whereby he can keep proper check of those who have paid for their hay, and they must SIGN to say they have paid, and so must he. I think this is utterly disgraceful.

To be honest I wouldn't care to call somebody like that a friend. Do try and let the YO know somehow, he's got a living to make the same as the rest of us!
