sorry, bit of a rant about what i saw today!!

I was riding in the field today at the yard with my parents and some friends when one of the other liveries came in to join us. this wasnt a problem until she proceeded to knock the poor pony about!

the mare is a really tiny thoroughbred stamp horse and is clearly very nervous. the girl rides her in a hackamore and has alot of kit on it. the pony started to shake her head up and down a little bit, the girl decided it would be ok to pick her whip up above her head and start screaming some rather colourful languauge at the poor mare and threaten to hit it. to this, the mare started to back right of her leg and started to reverse and rear a little bit. the girl then got off and started hitting the pony over her neck, whilst continually screaming at her. she got back on and the same happened again (she got off, screamed, hit it and got back on). the horse finally reared up and she fell out the side door and sulkily took the mare back. i also thought, why put a hackamore on a horse who clearly hates the pressure on her head??

but when she got back to her stable she started screaming at the horse again and started throwing things at it!! i couldnt believe it!! her sister sensibly took the horse off her and untacked her

her behaviour managed to upset practically every horse in the yard! our mare wasnt fazed by it all but a friends 5 year old was completely wound up to the point where she couldnt get on.

the girl supposedly works in a showjuming yard so i would of thought she would no better than to knock your horse about!
im not sure what to do because the mare is absolutely terrified of the girl. i dont know whether to talk to the yard owner about it because he's not particularly horsey. i was just to shocked to say something to her at the time!

sorry, had to get it of my chest!! cookies to you all for getting this far!

I think it would be a good idea to have a word with the YO, she was clearly upsetting other horses and liveries and nothwithstanding that, it is entirely inappropriate behaviour towards the poor mare. How would she like to be bulllied like that? Thats what it amounted to and if she does that in public, what does she do to the poor animal in private. Doesnt deserve such a beautiful creature!!!

You are more restrained than me, I would have slapped the girl and asked her how she liked it.

I'd suggest speaking to the sister first, as she at least seems to have some sort of control. As for the screamer, I don't think she'll be working with horses for long, as it is quite clear she has not the slightest idea of what she's doing.

The mare will turn on her soon and become dangerous because she will have no option but to defend herself - then, naturally, the owner will sell it.
You don't seem to know her very well but ..... I'm sorry, I would have to say something to her about horses being prey/flight animals and the importance of join-up in getting a horse to love, trust and respect you, rather than physical chastisement. If she reacts badly to that, and tells you it's none of your business, I would change my tacticts and tell her that if you ever witnessed that kind of behaviour again, you would have to inform a welfare organisation. I'd record it on a mobile too, incidentally. You have to speak up, morally you have no choice.
If it happened again after that, I would take the whip out of her hand.

yep, your right, shouldnt be allowed a horse, what a sad pity for that poor mare, Im sure she must wonder what on earth she did to deserve that treatment.
Shame you cant tell her mother, that shes a brat, and shouldnt be allowed to treat animals in such a way.
I wouldnt been able to control, myself

I totally agree here. For the last two days I have been watching a "very experienced horse woman

" bringing in a youngster and jabbing on the headcollar when he doesn't know what to do. I mean really jabbing down.... oh to be in my new yard like NOW. *sigh*

i quite agree with the title of your post. It upset and angered me to hear her disgusting treatment. Try the above suggestions and if she does it again, film her and report her to appropriate welfare and report her behaviour to someone with authority. Silly little girl with a bad temper will ruin that horse, what a shame. i always say, never ride if in a bad temper and never take out your problems on the horse.
Poor you having to witness that...sometimes our British reserve can get in the way of us saying what we really think. Well done for speaking up.
