Some Pictures of My Basenji

Hi,

I havent been on here for a while (nothing exciting happening with the horses!) but thought i'd do an update on Maya as a few people on here have been so nice about her

She has had a break from the show ring for the last couple of months. I always give my dogs a couple of months off in the winter and summer so they dont get bored of showing lol. But its worked out quite well as i have a litter of pug pups that have just hit the ring so it was a good time to give Maya a rest..

Anyway, she went back out a couple of weeks ago, just to an Open show as it was a judge we thought might like her, and we were right! Her first open show as an adult and she won Best in Show

I think she doesnt have anything else until Crufts now, and we are not expecting anything there. But, she had a great puppy career - 3 Best Puppy in Shows and 1 Reserve Best Puppy in Show and 4th in the Pet Plan Finals

Not bad!!

Lovely to see her at work and play, she is in fab condition, what do you feed her? Apart from Dominos (!)

Wow, she is beautiful! I fell in love with Basenjis after watching Crufts about 7 years ago. She looks fabulous and I can now add Basenji to the list of dogs I want!

Maya is fed mostly raw, but she also has Royal Canin complete a couple of times a week

She seems to do well on it, but mostly it is lots and lots of off-lead excerise that does it. A lot of people dont let their basenji's off lead at all, but Maya gets two walks a day with a good run on both of them

I think it keeps her physically (and mentally!!) in good condition

And she is a pet 99% of the time so i cant just post show pics lol Most pics i have of Maya are out in the fields knee deep in mud - theres nothing refined about her lol

Just had a look at your thread - love watching the GSD showing - crazy handlers sprinting around and around and around!! Must be exhausting lol!!


And thats so nice that people think so much of Maya, thanks for those lovely comments. She really is a fantastic pet, she is my baby completely (even sleeps in my bed when my BF is not here lol!!) and has just been the nicest puppy to own. They're certainly not for everyone, but i wouldnt be without one now!

I think a happy dog is down to so much more than feeding, like you say off the lead excercise and a happy life gives dogs a good shiny coat - as well as good food

Haha, I bet that will bust some myths about cossetted show dogs, she lives the life of a proper hound

(Crazy is the word, and it is exhausting - to watch, bet you won't miss us when the KC kick us out, haha

She is lovely. I never see the black and tan variety out and about, although the tan ones are fairly plentiful in the city.

I love her, she has a fab head and expression and her movement looks so free. I used to handle a Basenji in the ring, that was in the mid to late 80's and I think they were still a rare breed then and most people didn't know what they were. I love their attitude and character. great pics and well done for your win.

Maya has the most beautiful movement, it is lovely to watch! Most people still dont know what basenjis are, i often get asked if she is a long legged jack russell!!
