15.3hh TB mare, 5/6yo came to us yesterday, she was very light when we took her rugs off, no ribs glaring you in the face but seemed to have very little muscle and covering on her.

Very pronounced ewe neck at the moment just in front of her withers.

She's probably been ridden in a bungee/draw reins/similar in her previous home and has done some low level jumping and xc fun ride.

Have been told you need to ride her with a very light seat and not ever pull on her mouth.

We're planning on feeding her speedibeet, alfa oil and calm and condition every night this week (twice a day if poss) and then trying her on the lunge at the weekend.

What would you think to be the best way to start her in work again? (i don't know when she was ridden last)

I would be tempted to treat her as unbroken - luge very quietly in her tack for a short time, and then get on her. And see how it goes from there.

Bless her............

I know she has been worked as i saw her at the xc fun ride (she'd just finished as we were about to start) and i've ridden her myself twice when she was 4yo- she had only been broken 2 months and was very scatty and felt completely off balance.

However she must now be coming up for 6yo and has been away from our yard for over a year and i'm not sure how much she's done in that time and when she was last worked properly. To be honest from the quick look i took at her at the weekend i wouldn't want to ride her right now as i'd feel a bit heavy for her as she looks so light. eta i am not fat (9 1/2 stone) but she is rather light!

I will get some photos at the weekend
