Archie is going back to the vet today for what is hopefully his last cartrophen jab and a final workup.
For those of you who don't know, he bruised his left fore in May and while that healed perfectly with gentle hacking in walk only, he overcompensated and damaged the coffin joint on his right. X-rays also show one indicator out of 3 for navicular as borderline. In some ways he's been lucky as the navicular has been nipped in the bud and we wouldn't have found it if it wasn't for the other injuries. He's had 3 months field rest, cartrophen and injections into the coffin joint and raised heels.
I don't want to tempt fate (touching every bit of wood I can find
) but he does seem to have been gradually improving and for the last two weeks in particular he's been pretty good in the field. He's covered in scratches and grazes for the first time all summer suggesting he's getting up to mischief again, he's in the middle of the herd instead of hovering around the fringes keeping out of trouble and the last 5 nights in a row, he's trotted to the gate when called rather than walking as he's done all summer and looked sound, but I'm still dreading tonight. There's a big difference between a straight line in the field and being lunged on a circle on hard ground.
He's having a nice long break until after Christmas whatever happens tonight (my decision, not vet's recommendation) but I really hope we get the all clear tonight as there's not really any treatment left for him to have if he's not fixed.
