Hi,

I am rather worried as i believe that someone has cut my mare's mane! a fews days ago i found one of those knotted plaits in her mane but i disregarded it as i have always believed that the windy makes these, but this morning when i went to check her and her 2 year old filly someone has cut her mane. I have left a running plait in it after it got knotted and this morning her mane is at least 6" shorter and in a dead straight line also i cant find the hair anywhere and if she did manage to catch the plait surely it wouldnt leave it straight or as neat.

I am rather un-nerved about this and have contact Essex Horsewatch and will be getting farm keys out to freezemark and the filly this week. Just dont understand why someone would do this?

Has anyone else heard of anything similar to this?

I have included two pictures one was a few days ago, please ignore the lack of a hat but my daughter was having a hug and one photo from this morning.

Yes it does look cut. I wouldn't be panicking about it though - it's not much of an obvious marker is it, a thief couldn't say to someone else 'go and get the horse with the cut mane' as it still doesn't really look cut does it, it's still very long and shaggy. If it had been trimmed down to an inch, maybe!

I hate to say this but I'd be looking in your daughter's direction, kids sometimes get what seems like a good idea at the time, looks horrible, and then they deny it or blame someone else, even when it's obviously them! Or other kids on the yard?

I keep my horses at my mum and dads farm where they live and they were out last night and my daughter hasnt been up the farm since Friday. I just dont understand why? surely if you was going to cut it you would cut it all off? Im just worried as the person could of done alot worst!!

If it has been cut deliberately then they may cut just a little bit every day/week or whatever so it's not as noticeable than all of it being cut short at once? It's a possibility. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon!

That's quite weird - I was expecting to see the mane properly chopped ie about half the length of it gone. However, it seems whoever has done it has just trimmed the ends which is strange cos you think why? Are there any kids in the area or do others keep ponies at the yard? It seems more like someone's gone in to 'neaten' it up (as in a child's doing) as opposed to someone marking the horse out - as someone said it isn't exactly an obvious horse 'tag'. I think you're right to be vigilant and there's certainly no harm having your horses freezmarked anyway but i would imagine it's unlikely to be anything sinister. Strange nonetheless.

Strange though it seems, it does look like a childs handiwork, even if not your daughter.

If you get some sharp scissors and cut in an upward direction and not too much at a time, then you should be able to get it back as it looked before, albeit shorter!! But not so obviously cut looking.

Oh that is so so strange. Just showed it my OH and his thought was could she have gotten snagged somewhere and someone may have cut it to free her??

She has got a gorgeous mane, maybe some kid saw it and decided to make a bracelet out of it or something.

Just really is the most bizarre thing.... I'd be tempted to hide in the hedge spying for the next day or so!

There are no other horses at the yard and the yard is situated down a one car lane so is out of the way! No other kids live about there either!

I will moniter them both very closely but this was done during the night! ive told my dad that if the dog barks during the night he needs to get up pretty quickly!!!

I wonder if someone thought it was 'cruel' having her mane plaited and has cut the end off to get it out quickly and then tried to tidy it up? I had a time when a lady was continually putting plaits in my native ponies forelocks because she thought it was cruel if they had hair in their eyes. I managed to catch her one day and explained how it protected their eyes and no more problems; I think it could have got to the point of her going for scissors if she hadn't been caught though!

Oh i would say its been cut def! :( Might be kids messing around, I wouldnt have thought a thief, but you never know. You could get a camera set up to see whats happening?

May have to invest in some cctv, rather annoyed as been growing her mane since i got her three years ago but do agree that i doubt it is a tag. My filly who is two years old is a stocky skewbald and she hasnt been touched, Just doesnt add up!
