Hunni started coughing in her stable again today :/ the first time the vet gave her two injections an d some powder(we still have some) and the cough went, then it came back(didn't water hay ONCE!(friend done it for me but forgot to water)she coughs and I put her on her powder for a day and the cough is gone! Now it come back(it only ever comes if she is kn her stable) I have gave her some powder, the cough will go right? She is turned out now to get some fresh air, vet said she is allergic to the mites and dust in hay, I've watered hay down everyday, do you think it could be the shavings?

i could wel be the shavings whatones do you use?any way you could steam her hay? my dad and i made one are selves but you could throw one together for less than £50 - IMO steaming works better than soaking! or could she live out 24/7?

Definitely sounds like she is allergic to something in the stable - shavings or hay. I would do as above, steam the hay, and switch to one of the brands of bedding with no dust content (Easibed ????).

But very best of all, I would try and turn Honey out 24/7. Breathing problems can get serious, so I would also ring your vet for advice xxx

Just a couple of thoughts:

Could you not keep her out? It would be much healthier for her, and she wouldn't need any hay, at this time of the year anyway.

I have a mare with ROA (used to be known as COPD) - hopefully your horse has nothing as serious as that, but it could be the start!. Mine is kept out all year. She is allergic to hay, wet, steamed or otherwise, but is absolutely fine on haylage. But one half-haynet of hay and she's in trouble. If yours HAS to be stabled, why not try haylage?

it could be the shavings. my horse was on easybed which isnt that dusty. i kept her in a few nights and her nose started running and she was coughing. i got worried thinking she was getting a cold or something (hadnt had her injections then had just got her, getting them a week later) she could of had anything i was panicking. so i left her out a few nights as its a lot more healthy for her and she was fine. then i put her in the stable on a really stormy night and all of the coughing, runny nose etc started again. she can only be bedded on straw now. im sure your horse is fine dont worry. bedding is quite dusty. Try keeping her out thats what i do most of the time for my mare now and shes all well
