I viewed two horses today.

The first was a dappled grey 16.3hh hunter-type, who's won working hunter classes.
I liked him but he doesn't seem to have the scope for 1.30m classes. He's capable of 1.20.
I jumped him over a small course - about 1m - and he felt comfortable.

The second horse I tried was a 6yo, 17.1hh chestnut. This horse has some serious scope but I didn't feel comfortable on him. I felt like he was running off with me in the trot.
This was the fourth horse I had ridden so I was pretty knackered.
I didn't jump him.

Could someone tell me im just being silly?
I've agreed to ride the 6yo again first thing in case I was being dismissive.
 
I think you are doing the right thing trying the 6yo again and I think you should go with your gut on the grey :) If he won't be up to the job then he is not for you?

could you try him over 1'30?
 
My RI is going to ride the grey in the morning so he could try him over 1.30m. He jumped him 1.20 and he was just clearing it - he had a few poles.

I have 4-6 horses to try over the next two days as well as the chestnut again :)
 
I think you're doing the right thing trying the 6yo again - and a good idea to get RI to try the other one too.

I guess my question with that horse would be do you want something that you can just get on and is capable straight away?

It could be that he may be entirely capable of attaining what you want but may need work in the meantime to get balance, timing etc etc in order to do it comfortably and consistantly. Therefore, you may have to jump lower for a while. Not sure if that is an issue.

In the end, if you're not sure there are always going to be horses for sale out there, so just keep looking. As you say, you seem to have enough choice.

I think I'm scared that i might ruin the 6yo or we spend a lot of money and find that I don't click with the horse :eek:

I'm going to get some vids so I can see how we get on. Apparently it feels worse than it looks :rolleyes:
 
Not a great start to the day - I got my leg over and he buggered off before I could get my foot in the stirrup.
Needless to say, I hit the floor :rolleyes:

But..
I got back on and we ended up jumping a wee course of 1m.
He's a bit green when it comes to getting the correct canter lead but we can work on that.

This was the six year old do I have that right.
But did you love it , riding him , all the projects I have got I loved despite all the work in front of me .
Did your trainer like him and think him suitable for you that's important to.
 
Yes, its the 6yo.
My trainer, F, loves him. He's very genuine. I buried him in one jump and he just popped over it.
F thinks he needs to work on the flat a bit more but other than that he's jumping everything we put in front of him.

I was starting to get used to him by the end and the last few jumps were great.
I'm going to ride him one more time after we've seen some others.

I think I needed to fall off him and get it over with.
 
Good luck with it all it's always exciting the start of a new project for its worth I would always go for the project.
 
Good idea trying him again do you love doing the flat work side of things .
I do enjoy that the most apart from being too big he's the sounds just what I would love apart from being too big for me.
But if you don't really love that part of things perhaps another would be better.
See if you get that special buzz from any of the others .
I love other people horse hunting I hate it when it's me.
 
I rode four more this afternoon.

the first, an 8yo bay gelding, who refused a 90cm straight with my RI.
I couldn't get him to canter on one rein and only from walk on the other.

the second was a chestnut 12yo gelding. he was sweet. he popped over 1m nicely without much help from me but he doesn't seem to have the scope for what I want to do.

the third was a bay mare who looked lame behind.

the fourth horse was another 8yo bay gelding. this horse was lovely looking but very sensitive. whenever I asked for canter he shot off and it felt like we were fighting each other.
my RI popped on him and jumped him over a few big fences but we decided he was too much for me.

sooo.. I'm riding the 6yo chestnut gelding again tomorrow morning to make sure he's the one :)
dermott thinks he the best suited to what I want and we've started to click.
he's an absolute sweetheart to handle.

wish me luck - hopefully he'll be coming home with me :D
 
The big guy was very good this morning.
I popped another few fences around 1m and we've decided to go ahead and have him vetted.

I still need to find out his name. All I know is he's by beach ball, an ID chestnut stallion.

Fingers crossed he flies through :)

The bit about needing to fall of made me smile. I think you know when it seems right. Bit like dating! Great practice all this trying new horses. Fingers crossed for the vetting.
 
i have no idea what he's crossed with because the owner took his passport back with him :cool:
I didnt have much luck online either.

Is there any info about jack sparrow online?
I found one of beach ball's foals but obviously it wasn't the right one
 
The info comes from allbreedpedigree as I was online updating some info I just had a look out of nosiness :)

If you put in Beach Ball it comes up with three horses of the same name - two mares and one colt born in 2001, if you then look at his progeny there is one gelding in 2006 called Borneo Jack Sparrow. Of course it may not be the same progeny.

If so his breeding is very good and your possible new horse and my mare have the same great, great, grandsire. :)

If you put "Borneo Jack Sparrow" into Google it does come up with some limited information - a lot of it Dutch based (but in English) just remember to put in the quotation marks

If you're only comfortable jumping 1m, do you really need a horse that jumps 1.30m? And tbh I suspect the 6yr old sounds a bit green and sensitive for you from your description. There are plenty of nice horses that will jump 1.30 without dumping you when spooked or making you feel overhorses.
 
I actually said I didn't feel comfortable the first time I sat on him. I had crossed him off my list but was persuaded to try him again. :)

I'm comfortable jumping a course of 1.20. my RI jumped him over the three days we tried him and he didn't put a foot wrong.
He is a bit green, I'm quite happy to admit that but he's only 6.

He is very sensitive. I'm used to riding a big dumb-blood who doesn't listen so I need to learn how to ride him quietly.
We both need to get to know each other, assuming he passes his vetting.

Be positive - thanks, I'll have a look at that.
