I've suffered from back pain for the last 8 or 9 years (I'm now 26). I've recently started doing a lot more riding and competing but have also found my back worse since I started working (in a desk job) 4 years ago.

I've had a variety of treatments none of which have offered a long term solution and I've finally reached breaking point. It's interfering with sleep, work, riding, driving and I want it fixed!!

Does anyone know of anyone or any treatments that would assess me both generally and also in relation to my riding. The pain is different when I ride (and often translates to leg / hip pain) which it doesn't at any other time.

I'm also concerned the potential impact my wonkiness will have on my horses. I've noticed recently that one knee is noticably higher than the other in the saddle but I have asked people to check and my stirrups / feet are level???

Any ideas?

Will watch this with interest, you c have just described me lol. I've tried physio, sports therapy, massage therapy, chiropractor and of course doctors(who were very unsympathetic) I even bought a new mattress. Hope you get some good advice :)

Hey my oh is a welder and has had back pains for along time. He kept on his doctor till he finally got sent to a specialist physio, who said she couldn't do anything as he has arthritis in his lower spine and the discs has started to fuse. He was then sent to a back specialist. Got an mri, and has started nerve blocking injections into his spine.
So it goes to show its worth pushing your doctor now!!

I've had physio, sports massage, seen a chiro.

Been to doctors (over and over and over again) but had no sucess, was just referred to physio over and over who kept trying the same things.

The NHS physio I saw did try acupuncture - I hated it - it made me feel physically sick and dizzy and I've never been needle phobic so don't think it was that.

I've had x-rays of my back - some people have said my lower spine is slightly oddly shaped (the chiro) but doctors and physio said it looks fine.

One physio said it looked like spine was slightly curved (the first week I was there) then never mentioned it again.

Just been going round in circles and the treatment is so expensive . .

Have got an osteo clinic near me which might be worth a try . .

Kate Lockwood treats both people and horses - based in Berks / Oxon, she might travel if you pay a bit extra for her time and diesel. She sorted me out when pregnant, fixed my horse and generally assesses horses and riders in relation to each other.

I know a builder whose back was so painful from the physical abuse he has put it through due to his work that 3 years ago he bought a uni cycle to help it. It took him 3 months to learn to ride it and then he bought a large wheel uni cycle which he rides everywhere for leisure. He has NEVER had a problem with his back since (he is a man in his 40s).

He said that you have to have perfect posture to ride a uni cycle which is why it is a cure for a bad back.
Just a suggestion.
As for your crookedness - take a look at Joni Bentley's website - she addresses crookedness (she does get some stick on this forum but it is true that everyone including a horse favours one side)

Love the unicycle idea!

Could you find a horse osteopath who was willing to look at you as well (as they come from the ranks of human osteos)?

I know some people swear by physios but I've yet to have a good experience with any (saw 9 over 2 years on NHS who insisted they were making my pain worse to help me, turns out I had another injury & the pain was a major symptom which they all chose to ignore whilst they were making injury worse). If you find a good one, well done, but I'll never trust another one again.

Love the uni-cycle idea BUT thiink I'd be worse off after falling off it a few times.

I swear by my wonderful chiropractor - I ruptured a disc in my back aged 15 and suffered for years with sciatica - the muscle spasms and pain were capable of stopping me dead in my tracks. Work sent me to a chiro and it was like a miracle - pain free for the first time in years.

Sadly it doesn't last so I now go to a chiro fortnightly to keep my back right. In July last year I woke in terrible pain - no idea what I had done and ended up sleeping sitting upright in a chair for 4 weeks. Was at the chiro daily for several weeks, now back to fortnightly but my back has not been quite as good since. At nearly 60 I guess I should expect some aches & pains.

I have found going to the gym and using the treadmill has helped in that I can walk on a completely flat surface, pavements on an angle upset my back. Strengthening the core muscles, especially tummy muscles in essential for a strong back. Note to self - do some stomach crunches! Yer right!!!
