We ventured oop north yesterday to have a JB Lesson at Somerford. Given we have at least 3/4 fantastic XC schooling venues on our doorstep, we've never been before as it just seemed a bit pointless!
After 2 hours and a LOT of traffic, we arrived and straight away I started to feel a bit windy! I proceeded to use the men's toilets and stand around like a muppet thinking they office door was locked, when in fact it wasn't :o
Put teeny studs in, more to practise than anything (remember my face after Keysoe??), tacked up and set off for the course.

I'm not sure I have ever seen so many XC fences in on place, it is quite incredible! Moot's eyes were on stalks and she was getting rather strong, she certainly hasn't forgotten the XC game. My nerves continued to increase, especially when i discovered we had an Int. horse in our group...
Jeanette continued the theme from our lessons into XC, she wanted her in a longer, more relaxed frame. I really struggled with this as Mally was pulling hard, but as JB predicted, if I let my reins out a touch and lowered my hand, she stopped pulling  I hadn't thought my hands got that high, but watching the video I can really see it. She gave us courses but let us pick our own fences, so we were never pressured into jumping anything huge. As I was feeling nervy, I stuck with smaller stuff, although having watched the videos back and thinking about where I was in terms of confidence before Mal, I'm not so sure they are the small fences! :D

Warming up

The spooky fence that caused the other horse problems

Skinny roll top thingy

Green brush to sunken road (she thought about stopping after this, and I thought about carrying on alone!)

Big drop after this fence, she stopped at first, but went through fine after.

Triple brush after water

We had one slight moment were Mally stopped at a skinny brush, because I rode like a total tool, but other than that we weren't too bad. Just a tad rusty, but we haven't been XC since October, so I might let us off.
She also took me totally by surprise at some drop fences by stopping (Moot never stops!) but didn't bother the next couple of times.
She did her first ever owl holes without so much as a look, apparently made a few spooky fences look easy (I never think about things like that, because Mally never spooks at anything she has to jump!) and was as straight as anything. Mega pleased with my little donkey and ready for Oasby now.

A few video clips stuck together, there's no sound as the background noise was just wind and people chatting, so a bit pointless really! I know I jump a couple of fences the wrong way, but I was just doing as I was told, so no point in pointing it out to me :p

Although I did worry when we were walking back to the trailer and she went very footy. At which point my mum noticed she had lost a shoe! We had found one near the start of the session, but I hadn't thought anything of it as Mally never pulls her shoes off and she didn't feel any different! Mum trekked back to Jeanette, who was also amazed at how tough Mals had been, and we retrieved the shoe. Text my farrier on the way home, and by 7pm Mally had her shoe back on, the other front refitted just in case and all for free, how's that for service!?
I do wonder if its what made her hesitate at the drops, as she is usually so bold.

She is looking very grown-up, and making it look easy.

OMG how many jumps in one field

I wouldn't worry about the couple of sticky moments, sometimes it acts like a bit of a kick up the backside. Just remember to ride your drop fences more strongly at competition.

I would be thrilled with that as a first session since last year, and she was really good with all the distractions - loving the tail flick :p

Saw the vid on twitter - she looks fab. Wouldn't be at all surprised if the shoe making an early exit would have led to a stop....she must be one tough lady to not to show for the rest of the session!

I'm not overly concerned, Mally doesn't get hung up on stuff, she won't bother at Oasby!
I have never seen so many XC fences in one place, it's crazy, some humongous ones too!!

She is a tough old princess, no pea under the mattress situation for her :D

Do you know, I was only thinking about you and your lovely spaniels the other day, I'm obviously looking on the wrong bits of the forum.

She is a lovely mare, I really like her. Agreed though - how many fences in one place?!

Haha, I hide in here these days, there are still lots of crazy spaniels knocking about, although a few faces have changed! How are your lovely doggies? Have you still got that beautiful coloured?

Yes, I'd noticed!

Pip spaniel had puppies last summer - we kept one, little Jess, and she is going to be the most super working dog once her head calms down!

No, Oshk was sold last summer, I had moved to Lincolnshire with OH and the arable/drain hunting country sent him a bit crackers, so I sold him back home, to a lovely girl who was as bonkers as me at 18 - he is now back hedge hopping where he belongs, and I'm on the grey, Joseph, who is just wonderful - lets see what summer brings! Have you still got your very leggy cow pony?

Sounds like he's landed on his hooves then, bless him!
Hen is still around, although pretty much totally retired now. My Dad occasionally hacks him out. He loves his life dossing around in the field, ruling the roost bless him! When we take him for a hack he's a bit of a loony

Somerford is awesome, it seems to grow every time you go! Their farm rides are good too, and stay open all winter, so its a really useful place to visit. I also love the fact there is a good washing off area, cafe and huge lorry park for those of us crap at turning trailers round!!

She is looking really good. How old is she?

It was fabulous, but I think I'd only go again for a lesson. Plus it was crazy busy, I think I'd feel a bit intimidated on my own! We have Aylesford 15 mins away which isn't in the same league, but bloody good!

She is officially 7 now, although wont actually be 7 for another couple of months. She has now been broken in two years, so is officially a growed up! :D

I think I was down there at the same time as you yesterday. It was busy for a week day yesterday (lots of pro's XC schooling their horses before their first events) but you should have seen it on Sunday! Not only was the XC schooling fully booked but they also had 4 camps in, a riding Club dressage comp on, plus the usual farm ride and SJ arena hire.

Fantastic place though, I'm very lucky to live close enough to hire their facilities regularly.

She looks great and like you say I think the loss of shoe may have been the cause of the problems as they didn't look naughty.

On saturday it was insanely busy, there were a million and one hiring the XC and farm ride along with a show going on and people using the SJ arenas. It all blew Herbies brains a little bit!

I can't imagine how it would be at the weekend! The most I've ever seen at our local places is another 3/4 horses!
She's not at all footy today, so I should imagine she'll be back to her wonderful bold self on Sunday.

It would be amazing to live close to it, I'd love something like their farm ride locally.

Looking fab, good luck for the season, very jealous :)

Thanks, how's the big ginger one doing?
