Apologies for the poor quality but I was quite young when I took these! Sorry they are huge - I can never seem to re-size in photobucket.
I would be interested to know if anyone knows who they are?

They are really good photos, taken at exactly the right moment! Love the first jump, the horses back legs tucked right up! Not sure who they are, but the white colours with the black cap must be ian stark (Sir Wattie?)?

bit before i became an expert but loved looking! badminton used to be earlier in the year (it usually fell over my bitthday which is mid april) and look at how bare the tress are it looks earlier than that!

I hadn't thought of the time of year but you are right, it must have been earlier in the year. They were taken with my dad's old SLR Minolta, long before the days of marking dates on pictures, I figure it was probably somewhere around 82/85?

brilliant photos!

yeah... in 82 it was 15th april, 83 it was 14th, then 12th anmd then 18th

I'm so guessing here, but.....

1. Last of the fairies? Owen Brennan?
2. Toddy, Southern Comfort?
3. Mark Philips?
4.
5. David Green?
6.
7. Bruce Davidson?
8. Jane Holderness Roddam?
9.
10. Ian Stark , Sir Wattie/Oxford Blue?
11.

There's no way ANY of those fences would be aloud today!! Even the simple let up fence of the fallen tree is being jumped the wrong way round!!!!
No ground lines.. ground sloping down into the bottom of upright fences.. alot of post and rail, where as today they are all filled in/solid..
Therefore in conclusion todays poor safety stats must have something to do with the way horses are trained, ie the level of dressage going sky high!!

You could be right - I used to know who that was as it was my favourite picture that I took with that old camera, I had a copy framed in my bedroom for years!

So - Picture 3 Richard Mead?

I was thinking similar, also, look at the type of horse - half bred types don't you think?
Riders used to see a stride and kick and if they didn't they kicked and left it to the horse!
I have a few of others that I didn't post where is has obviously not gone to plan but they are still getting over the fence, albeit not that stylishly!

Was thinking the same as MDM - how times have changed for both jumps and the amount of tack or lack of on those horses.

Breastplate, snaffle bit and a flash and bare minimum boots. Grooms has it so much easier then.

Absolutely certain no2 has Toddy's legs - I've left his autobiography at work otherwise I could probably tell you which horse. It'll be too early for The Irishman, but it looks that sort of stamp.

They all look like reasonable half-bred hunters, but not 4* eventers! There's some seriously dodgy lower legs too!

Is the red jumper Jane Holderness-Roddam and The Warrior?

[/ QUOTE ]

Could well be! Random fact for you: if it is, then her groom that year would have been one of the best instructors I've ever had! Her eventing stories kept us more than entertained

none of them is jane, well on warrior anyway. when you work for her the one thing you can be sure about if you ask is seeing loads of memorabilia about warrior and nobby. could concievably be jane on ballingreen but i thought that was later and also i cant remeber ever seeing jane wearing red in a picture.
i think the second one is mark todd also and i am with you on ian stark but havent a clue about the others!

2 is Toddy, i'd lay a lot of money.
4 David Green, i think.
5 Richard Meade, maybe.

gosh that parallel looks bloody huge, with no groundline.
just look how forward they all are with their upper bodies in midair over the jumps, even at The Quarry.
fab pics, thankyou!

I will scan them after dinner and stick them up on a new thread, I picked " the best" of a bad bunch really!
I will also check through my pictures as I am sure I have some from early days of Gatcombe as well.
I am really showing my age!

I'm pretty sure that the lady in the red jumper is Jane Thelwall (now Wallace) on Kings Jester, who later won Burghley. I'm looking at a photo of her now going round Badders and I can tell it's her because it's the jumper, hat and horse are all the right colours and she has orange reins just like in my photo.

ETS:- For anyone with a sharp youngster - do not despair! I know the lady who backed Kings Jester and she said he was the worst horse in 40 years to back and in the end they had to hobble him on 3 legs before he would let you anywhere near him. He went to Jane and they won Burghley together but I don't think he was an easy horse at all!

These pics are great! I haven't got a clue who the riders are But I have jumped the wall in pic1 out hunting with the Beaufort!! Must of been mad it looks HUGE!

Nooo please do

Some of us only have Mary King winning Badminton on Star Appeal as their first Badminton memory (that's showing how young I am!)

Also distinctly rememeber she was held on course for ages whilst both Tina Cook and Pippa Funnell came off at the notorious mushrooms

ETS: there's a photo of Warrior in this book ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1872119794/ref=sib_rdr_dp ) if anyone's got it and wants to check his facial markings. Actually thinking about it, think L may be right as he didn't have THAT much white on his face - could well be wrong though.

I think 1. mite be Polly Schwerdt and Dylan - fab little horse! Have just had a sneaky look

in my 'Badminton' book and think number 8 Is Fiona Moore.
