something wrong with murphy help

I have just been down the field and something is wrong with murphy he is strainging and lots of fluid is coming out fo his nose, he has been pawing at the ground too. i dont know what to do i cant get a emergency number for the very and i canty get hold of anyone from the yard who might knwo whats wrong
please help
 
could it be choke.Horses can't be sick and if there is any blockage to their gullet it comes back up through the nose.It can be life threatening so if it is this you must get a vet immediately.
 
Sounds like choke to me, would definately get the vet as they will probably put a tube down to clear it. When friends horse had an accident in the field we called the most local vet even though we werent registered there and they came straight out.

Thanks all - it was choke, this was my first feeling but never having had the vet out before Im never sure. 10 minutes after having the injection to relax his muscles - he's fine. Although slightly peeved he cant have no food now until tomorrow. God only knows how Im going to stop him bolting it tomorrow - I guess its a handful at a time!
 
Glad to hear he is ok now.Make sure you damp his feed down for him and as Teapot said put some big rocks in to slow him down.If his teeth haven't been done in the last 6 months now is the time to get them looked at just in case this is the reason for him getting choke.
 
Hi all - yeah it was choke. He had had his normal food, chaff and mix wetted down - but must have just taken a huge mouthful. All of a sudden he turned to me and his eyes were almost out of his head, straining, i thought then it was choke so I started to rub his throat but he was getting worse and worse.
So I flew down the field to where my boyfriend was waiting with the car and got him to come up, tried ringing the knowledgeable people I know but no joy, tried calling the vet but only had the surgery number which was on a bloody long answerphone message. So we bombed back here to get the emergency number and quickly ask here if there was any idea what it was. (by this time he had fluid pouring out of his nose and he was straining every five minutes)
Thankfully at the end of the long message was the emergency number. got hold of the vet and flew back down the field. By this time Murphy had tucked himself away next to some other horses in an adjoinging paddock. By this time he was sweating conkers, so I brought him inside and put his under-rug on and just made him stand and let all the fuid run out of his nose. Poor thing he didnt even move and inch.
When the vet came she quickly gave him the muscle relaxant injection which he stood quiet as a lamb for - then ten minutes later he was back to normal! I stayed then with him for an hour just keeping him company - while he badgered me for food! (Youd think he'd have learnt eh?!) Then I had to put him out with no hay or food (boy was I in the dog-house).
This morning he's fine, had all his medication in a big bucket complete with rocks!! and is back to normal. God only knows how Im going to pay the call-out *laughs out loud* but its worth it just to see that face in the field. (I dont know if it actually could have killed him,but thats what some people say so Im really glad)
