Sore feet on hard ground?

Brought the wee one in yesterday (who is shod) from the field which was totally solid and around the gate it its quite uneven, she wasn't lame as such but she was really tender on her feet, like an unshod horse might be on stones. We had a look and there was a bit of heat in her heels and she was flinching when we touched them. She seemed a bit better today, is this just one of them things you have to get on with?

Could be thrush. Also, if her medial lateral balance isn't spot on then it can cause strain of the collateral ligament, which can show itself as 'footyness' on hard but uneven ground.

I take issue with "like an unshod horse might be on stones"

Sounds like a touch of thrush.

Does she have any pulses?

Ah, but an unshod (not working without shoes) horse may be sore on stones, but I doubt a barefoot (working!) horse would be!!

(....runs and ducks for cover!)

If the ground is quite hard and she'd been having a bit of a gallop out there then she could have just bruised/concussed (is that the word I'm looking for?!) her feet.. other than that it almost sounded like early laminitis, but if it's all okay today then I wouldn't have thought so.. xx

Just watch for laminitis...mine is being watched like a hawk and is having restricted grazing particularly with the frosty mornings etc and am now giving hay. I have been caught out with the mild weather(grass growing ) then sudden dips in temp.

Hope they are ok

Defo not thrush. Not convinced is its laminitis although not eliminating it. Think its more likely to be bruised was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue

You should see mine, we've had rain and mud for weeks, then overnight everything froze solid.

All but one are unshod, every single one of them (so it cannot possibly be that they are all physically infirm, not 25 of them overnight, unless there is something terribly wrong here) are tippy toeing about and moving oh so carefully on the rutted ground. Oh, and they all saw the farrier a week ago, nothing wrong with any of them.

On the smoother ground in the fields they are still hooleying about, especially the colts.

Yes, there can be a physical reason for sudden tenderness of course, and if there have been problems currently, or in the past then take that into consideration, but quite honestly, if the ground is rutted then I'd expect them to be a bit footy or bruised if the going has been good recently, bit like us walking barefoot on a bowling green and then having to cross a gravel road.
