My mare hari has a sore heel on her hind right. It looks like an over reach injury but on the back foot.

I have cleaned it every day and put on purple wound powder to try and dry it up. But i think her left hoof is catching it. The wound is on the inside heel bulb.

I have also tried an over reach boot on it that really helps and cleared it up but it rubbed all the hair off her heels.

Any body have any suggestions?

Some one else stepped on it or it could be the exit site of an abcess? Was/is she lame?

If the left foot is what is doing the damage have a chat to your farrier perhaps she is tracking close and he/she can do something to help.

Best thing you can do is too keep on keeping it clean

I would stop putting powder on it, as that will dry it, whereas keeping it moist will be better as it encourages healing

could just be she has hit it on a stone, is it an open slice? my old pony sliced his heel once, I just left it to heal naturally and kept an eye on it, and was fine.

I dont think it is an abscess my farrier was just out bout 2 weeks ago and she hasn't been lame at all and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort and lets me touch and clean it every day.

When the over reach boot was on it healed up completely.

To be honest i do think that she might be tracking up to close.

will i just leave it and dont put anything on it? will still clean it every day.

Sounds like a cracked heal...similar treatment to mud fever.
Is it a white foot? Much more like to happen on a white foot.
Try blobbing sudocrem on first if it isn't too sore, that could heal it. If not there is a thread here on summer mud fever, have a look on there for ideas.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

My chesnut gelding seems to have the same problem. It started like a little sore where he seemed to have caught himself, but now looks more like mud fever even though the fields are completely dry. Now seems to be 'spreading' to his other legs so I am beginning to wonder whether it is a fairly severe reaction to harvest mites (have been cleaning and putting an antibiotic cream the vet has given me for about a month now!).

My horse has a similar injury after doing an endurance ride at the weekend. Am sure that is was a result of her striking herself with her other hind foot - she has never done this before. She was shod 3 weeks ago so I am putting it down to excitement on the ride.

Would a sausage boot help prevent this in future??
