My mare has got an NS snaffle bit and recently it has started to really make the sides of her mouth really sore?

Can someone advise the best action take with this and recommend a snaffle bit to try?

Thanks in advance.

keep the bit the same, either be softer with your hands or get some bit gaurds.. ted as to have these as his skin is very soft.

also put bongela on the lips to easy discomfort.

I have been putting vaseline etc to see if that helps which it did a little..maybe the bit rings will be worth a try..thanks for that..

Yep would go for bit rings, my horse has a NS loose ring with them on.

Might be an idea to let the sores heal for a few days before riding again.

Buy some Alum from the chemist (sort of white/clear salt-like crystals - very cheap) and mix with warm water, then dab onto the sores. It will heal the sores and also 'harden' the skin off to prevent future rubs. It's used to heal bed-sores in people who are in hospital, etc.

Split sore or cracked?

My old horse could not be ridden in aby type of lozenge bit as for some strange reason they always split the sides of his mouth. I think it was because he has a very small mouth. He was fine in a straight bar or single joint.

My new mare foams lot when schooling and sometimes she gets "dry and flaky" skin on the outside of her mouth and bit like chapped lips! I just use vaseline and it works fine.
