Hi my horse has a really sore mouth - he has got splits in the corners, so bad i cant put a bit in ! how can i heal this ? and what can i do long term if his mouth is too sensitive for a bit ? very worried about him.....

I'd be tempted to wash with warm, salty water and let it heal on its own- maybe if it's that bad a few days off to let it heal and then get to the root of what it causing it- is the bit the right size and thickness?if your horse has a sensitive mouth nathe duo/ or happy mouth bits are very good for sensitive horses, maybe even some bit guards or some of the bit bandage wrap you can get might help. If you were still worried see what your dentist or vet suggests!

Hi,

I have experienced the exact same thing with a pony we brought years ago. When we got him his mouth was in a right state, weeping and bleeding at the corners, the problem in his case was the combination of bit and noseband, a drop noseband and a kimblewick was used and it pinched the mouth. We used sudocrem on the mouth bathing it and applying cream morning and evening, the sudocrem works perfectly to dry out and heal the wounds, but you will have to look at the underlying cause, you don't say what bit you have in the horses mouth, also check that your noseband isn't too low and pinching the mouth in conjunction with the bit.

I would continue to use him and ride him whilst he is healing but use a bitless bridle, also look at your riding, it may be nothing to do with you but you may need to look at whether you are being to harsh with your hands which certainly won't help.

Is your horse strong, is this contrubuting to the problem? Although my pony turned up with this problem, I looked at all aspects to fix and prevent this happening in the future, although he was strong, he rode from his chest, so I did away with the kiblewick and drop and opted for a drop and snaffle once his mouth had healed, I took lessons to learn to be able to ride and control him without such force in his mouth, I always used sudocrem on his mouth even when he was healed, this went on once a day for ages, just to give me peace of mind.

Hope this helps a bit :)

thank you so much ! he was onlyin a hanging cheek snaffle and i hunt him in a dutch gag - he isnt massively strong but he does tend to lean ! i have been told i over check when jumping sometimes but other than that if anything i am too soft in my hands ! have been hacking out in a hackamore to keep him fit and putting anusol on twice a day - have tried a happy mouth before and he wouldnt go forward in it but hes 7 now so could try him in it again see how he goes !
