On return from a 3 week holiday my horse has a rub on her withers from her rug. She's on full livery so it should have been picked up by the staff, however, that is a different post!

The wound is clean and not deep, I have put purple spray on it and left her rug off, she's stabled overnight now.

What else would you recommend I do with the wound?

Thanks in advance.

Keep the rugs off and ensure the wound is clean and healing well. Then get off to a tack shop and buy rugs that fit your horses shape.

The rug does fit but for reasons best known to themselves the staff have not seen fit to take the rug off the horse for 7 days!!!

Fresh air is the best cure for sores,as long as they are not weeping, any sign of infection and you wil need the vet to give you antibiotics.
As someone has said half necks or combos are best, and watch how heavy, as in physical weight, not the tog weight, as if the rug is heavy to begin with you can add at least half the weight again if it were to get wet.
Once the skin heals over dab on some distilled witch hazel to sooth and give srength to the skin and allow to dry before rugging again.
Try not to put on lots of potions and lotions as these can soften the skin and could make it worse.
These wounds can take an age to get better, so let it be known how angry you are that this should happen while you had left the horse in the yards care, there is no excuse.
My horse had huge wounds to his withers when I first found him, they were having no treatment and were obvious part of his long term abuse. His skin in this area is now very weak and can not cope with rugs for long periods of time, he has to have time with nothing on them every day , his rugs have to fit well, and I should have shares in witch hazel as it is the best thing I have found to help him.
