Sore willy (slightly gory)

So we have a 20year old pony, who about 5 years ago developed cancerous growths over the end of his willy which resulted in him having to have the end removed (poor boy ) however when they sewed it back up they dont seem to have done a great job, when he wees it seems to spray everywhere.

And now with all the hot weather and flies it has started looking raw and bloody again with the flies around it. Horse is genuinely not bothered about it at the moment (he was earlier in the summer but the vet came out and gave it a wash and some anti-itch stuff which seemed to take away the itch but not really improve it) but I am very aware we cannot just leave it now - I just wondered if anyone had any ideas about what to do about it without irritating it any more.

I hope this makes sense, help is greatfully received.

could you clean it with very diluted hibscrub, then put some sudocreme on it?.. i would try this first for a couple of days if no improvement give the vet a call for some advise...

Sudocrem - absolutely. Just think of baby bottoms in wet nappies - very similar really to what your poor boy is experiencing....

I had a horse with a similar problem but i'm not sure if it's exactly the same. Mine used to scald his abdomen with his wee as it wasn't directed downwards like one with a normal willy. It was always a problem and when he was stabled I gently washed and dried the area. When he was turned out, I used a waterproof cream. It was a lot of years ago and there's probably better creams available now.

See we have tried Sudocreme - but the problem being it tends to dry and and just roll into balls and go all flaky. And we are not keen to wash it every day (trying to keep it dry and horse really does not enjoy cleaning sessions - neither do I!)

Looks like it may have to be another vet job for the poor pony

I am not sure what sudocreme is, but we have something called sorbelene here which is great for this kind of thing, but otherwise give your vet a call he may be able to suggest something without coming out.

Maybe try bepanthen, it is the same as sudocreme but more oil based so will not roll up into balls or flake off (hopefully) you can get it from supermarkets in baby aisle. I tend to use it more than sudocreme now because it isnt so white and is less messy to put on. Might be worth a try?!
