As title really , but feeling really guilty . Sam has been in the dog house for the last week as he has managed to trash nearly every rug he owns , ripping the surcingles off underneath , thought he was just being a git as he would rather not wear one . Followed him down the road today and noticed he had his willy hanging out (unusual for him) and it looked a bit pink . On closer inspection it looked red and sore .I washed the sheath with hibiscrub and put some savlon inside , need to know if I should be phoning vet (he is well in himself and eating fine) or if there is something I can get or do for him . What should I look out for etc etc . All very awkward ...any tasteful replys gratefully accepted!

Strangely not a bit , was expecting it but he seemed to find the really cold water soothing so am thinking its an itchy problem . Do you have a suggestion as to what would be better?

Well my old boy has had very smelly bits in the past, and originally my Vet suggested weak hibiscrub, then he changed his mind and said it was too 'harsh' and suggested simple soap (but I never got this!). So I washed 'it' in warm water and applied udder cream

I have heard suggested that KY Jelly was quite good, so I suppose they cleaned it in water, dried it off (oh!!) and then applied it

As long as he is happy then that's good and as I always say 'Mum' knows best

Let us know how his itchy bits are

I'd get the vet out pdq. Never experienced this myself but I'm sure I read somewhere that a very sore and swollen willy can get stuck outside the sheath and that is a very serious problem. Might need antibiotics to help him. Is he one of those geldings that likes the ladies? He might have been flashing it around a bit with all the mares coming into season and it might have got infected or he might have got over excited and have big probs! Poor boy - bet it hurts!

Sheath cleaners are dreadful and kill off the good bacteria that lurks inside the sheath, I would get the vet out in case he needs antibiotics.
I clean my boys bits with baby wipes, normally quite cheap at Tesco etc and then apply baby oil which helps loosen any further smeg, he used to try and kick my head in if I went any where near him and now I use this regime he thoroughly enjoys the whole experience, a tad too much if you ask me!

called the vet out to have a look and was just given some antibiotics and told to leave it well alone.... i don't think he's leaned too much from this however he now goes over fences rather than through them

By the way I wasn't laughing at your problem but at Squirtlys_mum's last llittle comment!! Actually thinking about it my gelding seems to like having his 'bits' cleaned a bit too much too, I always do it with rubber gloves and find that I have a horrible 'pinched' look on my face all the way through, not nice! Good luck with sorting it out, would think that Hibiscrub is a bit too strong, have to be careful with personal bits.

Keep an eye on it for a few days and put something a bit gentler like baby oil on it so keep it lubricated, if no better by tues, prob best to chat to the vet.

Spooks hates having his bits cleaned, so I have to ambush him at a relaxed moment and squirt it with large amounts of baby oil (OH reliably informs me this wont hurt in any way!!) and all the smeggy bits just seem to fall off!

He seems to quite enjoy that - better then the sponge - tried to kick me in the head when I tried that!! (He only gets that done when he is doped to have his teeth done!)

I had a cob who always got a smelly willie I found that if I washed it with horse sheath cleaner and then applied a hypoallergenic non perfumed human cleanser and did it every 1-2 weeks it stopped the smeg forming which catches foreign bodies like shavings and straw which cause the problems. X
