Sores from grazing muzzle

I've had my welsh section A pony in a grazing muzzle for a few days. She seemed to take to it no problem but after 24 hrs she had some sores on the very bottom of her muzzle and her chin, obviously from pushing down to graze. I took it off to give her a break for a day, and when she saw me coming to put it back on she refused to be caught! Has anyone else experienced this?

I remember someone previously posting this problem. The advise was to stop using to allow the area to heal and change the product, try another brand which may give a better fit, or try to adapt the one you have. Pressure sores can build up with anything if left on for long periods of time, all that is needed is constant skin contact for this to happen.

A difficult one, because you are trying to assist the horse by using the muzzle and clearly it is necessary for the horses health. To prevent pressure sores, sheepskin is a good aid and if that could be glued to the muzzel where it is causing the sores this may help.

Is it the shires muzzle?
If so, buy another. Then alternate them, put sudocrem on the sore and after another couple of weeks both muzzles will have moulded to pony's muzzle shape and won't rub anymore. Each muzzle seemed to rub ours in a different place, so by alternating the two muzzles each rub got a 'break'.

i have a be friendly one, or be nice or something like that!! its great, it does rub just above the nostrils after a week or two, so solved the problem by superglueing vetbedding in strips to lift it off the areas that rubbed. now perfect!!!!! ps dont get a green guard one ive heard bad stuff about them!!

Hmm I'm having the same problem. Went to see my mare tonight and she has three seperate 'rubs' from her Shires mask. Any suggestions for a better one? What's bad about the Greenguard ones?

My lad has had very bad sores from his shires one, I have tried to put padding in but it has made it worse so I have had to leave it off until it heals then reasses the issue.

So I would either suggest lining it with something and seeing how that works, or leaving it off until it heals.

I have a section A at home and friend also has one, both are in the shires muzzle, you need to get some sheepskin and line the bits that are rubbing with the fluff glued on, not over nose tho!!

I have also gone and ordered the Greenguard one so I can alternate them and hopefully this will work...!
